About this listen
The uplifting story of two unlikely mountaineers: a man in late middle age and a fearless pint-sized pup who, together, scale Colorado's highest peaks.
By the time life had finished hitting Rick Crandall from all sides, he was at the lowest point of his life, both personally and professionally. Depressed to find himself facing a mid-late-life age crisis and watching his finances crumble as the tech industry bubble burst, he hopes his future isn't headed downhill. It is at this critical juncture in their new marriage that his wife, Pamela, makes an astute and life-changing suggestion: "Let's get a dog."
So begins the story of Emme, a 200-pound Saint Bernard trapped in the body of a five-pound Australian terrier puppy. Soon, Emme and Rick hit the hiking trails around Aspen, Colorado. While she is groomed to be a show dog, it's soon obvious that her heart is in the hills and with Rick, who decides to add more challenging hikes to the mix. Before long, they are scaling Colorado's "fourteeners", peaks with altitudes of over 14,000 feet. On one magical day, Emme climbs to the top of four "fourteeners", a quarter of the 16 such peaks she will complete during her life without once being carried on a trail or on the rocks on the way to a summit.

Great story, beautifully read
A story of a beautiful friendship between man and dog, and even though not read by the author, it's read with emotion and feeling. A really enjoyable book and story. Highly recommended.

The story about Emme's resilience
I liked the details in the book, the exhilaration and exciting pace of the book. Emme sounded like she was amazing, it brought back memories of my own previous dogs and reminded me just how valuable and precious companion they are. The description of the panorama were great too I feel like I could visualise the scenery.

Wonderful
I loved Emme, and tails of her adventures loads. Makes me miss having a dog, maybe even inspiring me to get another.

To say they are our best friend is an understatement
As an outdoorsman and dog lover myself I fell in love with this book from the start. I kind of knew there would come an end, as I have recently just lost my 4 legged partner who got me out there as well originally, from those initial taking the dog out for a walk, to a dog jog to becoming my training partner as I took on Marathons and Uktras then Mountain Events in my late 40s and 50s. I came to realise that my dog was not just my best friend, he was my guru that showed me a better way to live. This book was exactly the same. I loved it

Dog shows!
Two hours in and it’s just been waffle about dog shows. I was hoping for a book about hiking experiences (ie, something like Wild by the excellent Cheryl Strayed).

A book of two halves
I was ready for quitting this one half way through but in the end just about glad I persevered.
The 'introduction' was far too long with wasted pages dedicated to grooming, dog shows etc - not to mention pages dedicated to coffee!
The interesting section started with the relationship developed in the mountains, which was the reason I purchased it in the first places.
Well narrated.
