About this listen
A dark historical thriller with a supernatural twist, The Devil's Ark is Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile meets The Exorcist.
'The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world that he did not exist.' (Baudelaire)
Twelve years after fighting in Mesopotamia in the Great War, Harry Ward returns to the land where he lost his faith, his mind and almost his life. Haunted by bloody visions of bayonets, shrapnel and shells, he takes up the offer of a simple job, working as a photographer on an archaeological dig outside of Mosul.
As the dig progresses, Ward begins to realise that what they have uncovered is no ordinary temple; it holds a terrible secret. Now flashbacks are the least of his problems...and he must face a new kind of terror.

A chilling read
Usually, when books show what there is to come at the beginning, I lose interest, however, if you stay to the end, you will be rewarded. The story and the characters were excellent and the narrator was a brilliant choice for this book. I hate in some books where you know what's happening and are screaming at the characters to figure it out, however, in this book, you go along with the characters and don't know the full story. The end was for filling and it certainly not rushed. It's a good read or listen if you want to kill time with a tense twist.

Disappointing dirge
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would cut out some of the endless repetition and move the story along a bit. It did drag. I chose the book because I have heard the reader before, like his voice and the storyline seemed intriguing. I am a historian and hoped the story would enlighten me about ancient civilations in the area. However, I soon tired of the key character who appeared flawed from the start and the setting of the story - none of the characters seemed real but very two-dimensional, flat and stereotyped. I got to the stage of thinking, who cares if the spirits get them? it was all a bit too contrived and fantastical.
Would you ever listen to anything by Stephen Bywater again?
Yes, provided they were not 'supernatural' stories or about ancient religious groups in desert countries!
What three words best describe Daniel Weyman’s voice?
Smooth, varied, entertaining
Did The Devil's Ark inspire you to do anything?
Avoid ancient religious groups and not to dig up hidden burial sites in the desert! Seriously, I was interested in the archaeology aspect but this book did not really dwell much on that side of the story.
Any additional comments?
Disappointing, one of the very few books I have listened to that I was tempted to ditch half-way through. I would not personally recommend this book, but that is my opinion and may not be shared by others.

Excellent slow-burner.
A wonderfully slow burning and evocative tale of horror. An archaeological expedition digs into an ancient Mesopotamian ruin, looking for valuable artefacts, but unearthing something else... Excellently narrated.
