About this listen

A temple city in lush southern India, Madurai is bustling with pilgrims and steeped in history and tradition. Yet not all traditions should be upheld...

1992. As a low-caste cleaner for a wealthy family, Janani's duty has always been quiet obedience. Even at home, her mother-in-law's word is law. Janani has never dared to dream of a different life. But now, she has something she'll do anything to protect... even if it means losing everything she's ever known.

2019. Nila doesn't remember her life before they moved to Australia, and her parents never talk about their past. So when she joins her parents on a trip to their hometown, Madurai, she hopes she'll finally uncover the truth. Especially as Nila seeks acceptance for a secret of her own...

For both Janani and Nila, love isn't simple.
Sometimes love is an act of courage...

Terrible narrator

Beyond bad narrator. I had to give up. Will now read the print book as the story is excellent.

The story line which is still as troublesome today as it was in the past

The voice over for other characters wasn’t the best which made it harder to differentiate between the characters

Beautifully written, heartbreaking story

A beautifully written, heartbreaking story of a piece of history rarely talked about. The characters are all believable. We are led to believe that out of adversity something positive can be found. I felt the narrator had pitched perfectly the time of the novel

Mesmerising

This book is so beautifully written. I found myself immersed in its world. Every detail was perfectly penned. This is an absolute gem of a novel. The main characters are wonderfully filled out and I found myself swept along in their lives wanting so very badly to hold these women. I felt their loss and pain, the very trap of their lives keenly. A courageous story of love, loss, betrayal and grit. A story of a mother’s love for her daughters.

Great book ruined by narration

I struggled to get into this book with the very British accent for rural India story.
I pushed through, distracted, the unnecessary pauses and all.
That said, the story will stay with me and I just wished it was given the right narrator to boost the experience
