About this listen

A mother desperate for the truth. A daughter hiding a terrible secret.

Melanie Oak appeared to have the perfect life. Married to her childhood sweetheart, Jacob, the couple live with their beautiful, loving, teenage daughter, Beth, in a pretty village. Nothing can shake her happiness - until the day that Beth goes missing, and is discovered beaten almost to the point of death, her broken body lying in a freezing creek on the marshes near their home. Consumed with grief, Melanie is determined to find her daughter's attacker. Someone in the village must have seen something. Why won't they talk?

As Melanie tries to piece together what happened to Beth, she discovers that her innocent teenager has been harboring some dark secrets of her own. The truth may lie closer to home and put Melanie's life in terrible danger.

A completely gripping psychological thriller with a twist you won't see coming. Fans of The Girl on the Train, The Sister and Before I Let You In will be captivated.

Brilliant story - kept me listning

Fantastic book. I kept thinking "oh it's obvious, I know who did it". No it's not! Twists and turns. A little graphic in parts. When the narrator was just reading the main part she was really annoying, and I wanted her to just get on with it and don't;' try to b so precise! Otherwise, highly recommend.

Awful narrator.

This book was totally ruined by the narrator who read like she was reading to a reception class! Every word was artificially enunciated and she read really, really slowly.
The story was a good one, but the "shocking twist" was predictable, so not as gripping as I'd hoped.

Terrible narration

This book annoyed me intensely because whilst the story was gripping & interesting, the narration was very poor & stilted & therefore difficult to listen to. I listened til the end but couldn’t hear it again. It may have been poor editing, but the emphasis on words was all wrong, like listening to a 7 year old, who hasn’t yet learned to scan ahead when reading aloud. A real shame, as it was an intriguing plot.

The darkest lies

This was an excellent tale and the Fen landscape was a great stage set for the action. Characterisation was believable and beautifully crafted. Very much enjoyed this realistic peak into a mother's love.

Slow but worth it

I found this story really slow, I stuck with it longer than I really wanted to because I wanted to know who the assailant was. The readers voice was a little bit annoying. I found the way the author kept repeating 'Beth' in the mother's thoughts tiresome.
Overall though, I thought it was well written. The twist is unexpected and the book has a satisfying end.

Great story, narration took a lot of getting used to

Definitely a twisty one though you worked or pretty quick who the main secret character was.
Very well written and really enjoyable to listen to

After the 3rd chapter i was going to return this book and read it on kindle because the narration was appalling . Before doing so i turned up the speed of the narration . This just about made listening bearable . Doesnt anyone check these narrators work ? spoilt my enjoyment of this book.

Great story line

So very different to what I've read before my only criticism is the recording in between chapters you could alway tell one chapter was finishing and and new one was between thought it seemed a little unprofessional but great story line love it
