About this listen

Marty Strauss, a gambling addict recently released from prison, is hired to be the personal bodyguard of Joseph Whitehead, one of the wealthiest men in the world. The job proves more complicated and dangerous than he thought, however, as Marty soon gets caught up in a series of supernatural events involving Whitehead, his daughter (who is a heroin addict), and a devilish man named Mamoulian, with whom Whitehead made a Faustian bargain many years earlier, during World War II.

As time passes, Mamoulian haunts Whitehead using his supernatural powers (such as the ability to raise the dead), urging him to complete his pact with him. Eventually Whitehead decides to escape his fate after a few encounters with Mamoulian and having his wife, former bodyguard, and now his daughter Carys taken away from him. With hope still left to save Carys, Marty Strauss, although reluctant to get involved in the old man Whiteheads deserved punishment, decides to get involved and attempt to save the innocent gifted addict from being another victim to the damnation game.

Clive Barker doing what he does

I haven't read Clive Barker in many years. It's great tp het reacquainted with him!
This was quite an easy and enjoyable listen. Tje story is typically Barker(no spoilers here) and the narrator was pretty decent too. The story, to me, was not quite as good as Great and Secret Show or Weaveworld but those are pretty high bars! (I LOVE the Great and Secret Show)
This book has reawakened my desire for more Barker.

Not Clives best work

Some books take you on a journey and make you forget you are reading/listening to a bunch of words, Clives books can often do that. This one however made me feel like I was sat listening to or walking to work listening to an audiobook, the story was fine and the narration was spot on but I just never felt it took me away, with the exception of the parts based during the war. Strange how those parts captured my imagination but the rest did not.

Compelling

I really enjoyed this book as felt the narrator really brought it to life. The storyline was sufficiently complex to draw the listener in without creating too many layers or characters that might otherwise have become confusing. Steve Vance was the key here in that his extra ordinary vocal talents easily kept the characters believable and engaging whilst the sound effects and rich description from Clive Barkers imagination really transported the listener into his world. The horror, for me came from the main characters measured unfurling comprehension of the unspeakable acts of mutilation and murder enacted with relish by the undead servant at his masters request. Not necessarily the stuff of nightmares, but still highly recommended.
