About this listen

The much-anticipated daily "reading" version of The Message in audio format is finally here. Designed for individuals as well as small groups, The Daily Message combines Discipleship Journal's renowned book-at-a-time reading plan with a flexible format that allows the listener go through the Bible in one year or spread out the listening with an alternate two-year plan. This version provides monthly plans for 26 readings, and allows for reflection time, minimizing frustration. It also includes Eugene Peterson's acclaimed chapter introductions from The Message.©2006 Eugene H. Peterson (P)2006 Oasis Audio LLC Bible Study Bibles Spirituality Royalty King

Difficult to navigate

Would have been better if the days were bookmarked, as it is very difficult to rewind accurately.

No commentary / questions as in the printed version.

Difficult to navigate.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It's fine if you want to read straight from Genesis to Revelation without any diversions.
But, if you want to start the daily readings halfway through the book - good luck finding where you want to start. (As someone who did this with a different version, I wanted to start in the Epistles)
Numerous readings are within one 'chapter', which makes it difficult to know which 'chapter' to go for if you only want to go through the psalms or the Gospels.
The opening statement tells you to listen to the intro to learn how to use this book - the voice in the intro is quiet and husky and difficult to listen to. Thankfully the voice for the main Bible reading is good.

What other book might you compare The Daily Message to, and why?

If you like the NLT 'Bible in a Year' style, where you have a portion of both Old and New Testaments, a psalm and a proverb.... Then this Book is not for you

What three words best describe Kelly Ryan Dolan’s performance?

Always Good - have him on other versions :o)

Was The Daily Message worth the listening time?

Didn't get very far....

Any additional comments?

The description didn't really give me a full enough picture of How the reading plan was set out, and how the navigation works. Don't think I would have bought it if I had known.

It actually does the trick

I'm afraid I've got to disagree with the other reviewer. I can see that this won't work if you're trying to only listen to specific sections or to skip ahead to catch up with your reading group if you've fallen behind. But if you intend to listen it through from start to finish - as you do with an audiobook - it's simply excellent. The narration is passionate without sounding over-dramatized and Peterson's translation really lends itself to a narration. I couldn't come to grips with the Message translation as a written book, but listening to it really opens up the Bible for me. If one considers that, for millennia, the Word of God has been primarily passed on verbally with Rabbis, Priests and Pastors relating the stories to their faithful (and illiterate) flock, one wonders whether this could perhaps be a return to something we've lost. This isn't a study Bible, it's a Bible reading tool designed to read through the whole Bible and get the big picture, connecting the dots like never before. If you, like me, have never made it through the whole thing, I suggest you join me and let Peterson and Dolan tell you the old-old stories like you haven't heard them since you were a kid.

A helpful way to consolidate knowledge of scripture

I decided yet again to read through my bible in a year, feeling that I lacked a good overall understanding of how the book fits together. I'm so glad that I decided to do this this year. I listen to the Daily Message and I am simultaneously reading through the Living Bible. I have found that when I read it all seems more familiar as I have already heard it. It's great to be able to stop and pause when I need to make notes or do some research if I need more depth and insight from another translation. NB I realise that the MSG is a paraphrase and so I use it with the ESV and Amplified versions of the Bible. I recommend this highly!

Unuseable

Do not buy! The files you are given are huge in time which means you cannot search for the day number that you require without using up lots of valuable time. Also it comes in .aa format which is a total pain. When will these people realise that the customer wants a format that will play on anything? Do yourself a favour just buy the book which is a Godsend. I have wasted my money on this.
