About this listen
Why don't more 60-something-year-olds get to have fun magical adventures?
Delia Spark is caught in a maelstrom. Her former life as a London theatre director is on the brink of implosion amid a scandalous divorce, a tarnished reputation, and, for reasons she cannot fathom, things keep spontaneously combusting around her. Her sixties were supposed to be peaceful, but now even her grown daughter won't return her calls. Escape is the only option.
In the remote village of Myrtlewood, she seeks solace, not suspecting that in this quaint haven, far stranger adventures await than the urban chaos she left behind. Delia is oblivious to the undercurrent that her arrival stirs. Amid whispers of magic, she finds herself on the precipice of an extraordinary transformation.
As she grapples with these new realities, an ominous shadow lurks—a secret Order steeped in ancient lore is watching, plotting, and scheming. Delia must confront her destiny. Will she surrender to the enchanting pull of Myrtlewood and the ancient prophecies of the elemental crones, or will she claw back her former life from her power-hungry ex?
Welcome to a world where the extraordinary is ordinary, where tranquillity is a veil for the mystical, and where time itself whispers secrets of old served with delicious cakes and cups of tea—or coffee if you insist!

Excellent story and characters, superbly performed.
It’s refreshing to have a story set around a sixty something woman. The storyline is both gripping and funny. The characters are engaging. I loved the performance.

Good fantasy fiction
Really good character description. The story moves well and is easy to follow. Voice performance very good, with easy to recognise Voice change for each character.

Excellent new narrator!
Really enjoyed this book due to a change of narrator for the Myrtlewood books - Bethan Dixon Bate. Fabulous narration.

Dry humour!
Love Iris's books - I particularly like this one as my age group! Loved the connection the crones make & the 'battle' not wanting to give too much away, was great 👌🏼 looking forward to next book 2 👏🏼👏🏼💫

Really enjoyed this
I decided to listen to this after seeing loads of adverts for it on Social media and having the main character at a similar age to myself thought I'd give it a go. I did worry that you had to read the Myrtlewood books first so I messaged the author on her Facebook page. Her answer was the crones do feature in the other books but could be read as a stand alone.
Bethan Dixon Bate is a really good narrator and brought all the characters to life and each had their own personality..

Too overwritten for my taste
The story is a good one and I loved the idea of older women coming into their power. Margie and Delia are great characters.
It was too overwritten for my tastes, too much repetition of thoughts and descriptives. Less would have been more in this case. A lot of fantasy stereotypes too, which also didn’t work for me.
Some of the narration was so caricature in nature that it was unlistenable. I will be returning this book unfinished.
