Summary

Dom Joly enters the strange land of conspiracies as a wide-eyed tourist, eager to investigate the origins of some of the most pervasive conspiracy theories and meet the people who believe them.

Conspiracy theories are starting to become so much more than the obsession of fringe individuals. A survey by New Science magazine found that the percentage of people believing in one or more conspiracies had risen from 15% twenty years ago to 35% per cent last year. They are shaping politics, media, the way we view life itself.

In The Conspiracy Tourist Dom Joly sets out to find out where these ideas come from and learn about the people who create and believe them. His travels take him underground with followers of QAnon, to Roswell and the sites of mass shootings, and to the ends of the earth as he tests out Flat Earth theory. Along the way he talks to psychologists and specialists who analyse indoctrination, and considers what harm these movements might do to our increasingly uncertain future.

But what if these people Joly has long dismissed as crazed loonies actually have a point? What if we are the sheeple and they do have some special insight into the great issues of our time?

Another brilliantly read book from Dom just not quite as good as the others.

Firstly to say that Dom is my favourite author by far and I’ve loved all his work but this is just good, I found the book a little disjointed in places, content was great and then weak, he pulls it off no problem as his skills in reading and entertainment are as good as ever but measured to his previous work there’s something missing.
If your a fan of Doms like me I would recommend you listen as your be happy to back into the world of Jolly, if your a first time Dom reader I would say go back a bit to make the most.

Interesting!

Having been to the less remote places discussed, this was a fascinating alternative viewpoint!

Lack of interviews and arguments with people who believed in conspiracies.

Quite a tedious listen if I'm honest. I thought this would be fun and interesting, maybe some interviews and arguments of people who actually believed in the conspiracies. However, this wasn't that at all. Too many times throughout, Dom reverted to speak to a pretend animal to get points across. Overall it was ok.

Genius Joly Strikes Again!

Couldn't wait to download this immediately, after attending the pre-launch chat yesterday. The event expertly curated by Adrian Chiles - interviewing Dom about the stories behind the book. So yes, admittedly, I am reviewing the book from the status of a bit of "fan", but this is genuinely a great book - full of characters Dom describes richly. Always humorous and ready to poke fun at the obviously ridiculous - while there's lots of interesting background about conspiracies I didnt know about before. But Dom also tackles the very real danger that the modern world (or the internet) poses when people believe and act on these conspiracies, often touted by those who get very rich on the back of them. I recommend going to the live tour shows.

Make It Stop 😭

Don't worry, the title for my review isn't in regards to the entire book. it is in regards to DJ's absolutely appalling attempts at a North American accent.

Considering quite a good chunk of this book is set in the USA, the character acting Dom employs with that genuinely god-awful American accent... it just sounds like he's a dad trying to embarrass his kids.

The overall story was good fun. Granted, it does go a little bit off-piste with a few very obviously fictional scenarios, but overall it was entertaining.

I'd really like to give this book a bit more praise but in all honesty, having listened to all of his previous works, this one certainly seems to be a bit lacklustre in comparison to titles such as The Dark Tourist.

The last two titles of his (this included) have both been a bit naff. The concept for this book had a lot more potential and overall, this book definitely seems to have been quite rushed.

Good reading but not too much information on the actual conspiracies

Was fun but more about Dom than the stuff he was looking at. Not investigative just an adventure

Inspiring and hilarious

I've always like Doms books.
A mixture of uniquely cheeky humour and really eye opening travel accounts.
As someone who has never favoured the basic beach holiday, I've found all Doms travel books inspired new wishlists and ideas for themed travel.

This book is well balanced and surprisingly mixed with fantastic social commentary.

Highly recommended to anyone!

They're all mad y'know...

Interesting and compelling. Hilarious too. Had many laugh out loud moments. Good reminder that if you go swimming in Fogo make sure to put on a parachute too. Great listen.
