Summary

In the streets of Waterdeep, conspiracies run like water through the gutters, bubbling beneath the seeming calm of the city’s life. As a band of young, foppish lords discovers there is a dark side to the city they all love, a sinister mage and his son seek to create perverted creatures to further their twisted ends.

And across it all sprawls the great city itself: brawling, drinking, laughing, living life to the fullest. Even in the face of death.

City of Splendors is set in the most important city of the Forgotten Realms setting: Waterdeep, city of intrigue and secrets. Its authors are considered to be among the most authoritative figures writing in the Forgotten Realms setting. This novel is their first collaboration.

Had to give up… twice.

I’ve listen to hundreds of audiobooks on here and Forgotten Realms books are among my favourite. However, the narrator of this book is the only one so far who has forced me to give up listening. I even tried a second time, months after buying this book, but gave up again with 12 hours to go. The robotic drone, childlike reading manner and no attempt to voice characters with any degree of feeling made listening to this unbearable.

A narrator can make or break an audiobook and there are some amazing narrators out there. Some of the best ones could make a telephone directory sound interesting. A bad narrator can sometimes be tolerated but this is the first time I just couldn’t ignore it.

The slow story didn’t help matters. I tried to return this but it wouldn’t let me. Buyer beware!
