About this listen
A debut that captures the experience of the Egyptian revolution like no news report could.
The City Always Wins is an audiobook from the front line of a revolution. Deeply enmeshed in the 2011 uprising in Tahrir Square, Mariam and Khalil move through Cairo's surging streets and roiling political underground, their lives burning with purpose, their city alive in open revolt, the world watching, listening, as they chart a course into an unknown future. They are - they believe - fighting a new kind of revolution; they are players in a new epic in the making.
From the communal highs of night battles against the police to the solitary lows of postrevolutionary exile, Omar Robert Hamilton's bold debut cuts to the psychological heart of one the key chapters in the 21st century. Arrestingly visual, intensely lyrical, uncompromisingly political, and brutal in its poetry, The City Always Wins is a novel not just about Egypt's revolution but about a global generation that tried to change the world.

Tahrir Square brought to life: exquisite narration
I recently read this book and was so captivated by the story and the writing when I saw the audiobook I immediately bought it (used an audible credit).
The book is beautifully written and devastating in its content and I was slightly concerned that the narrator may not do it justice. However Khalid Abdalla does nothing short of a brilliant job.
I am constantly on the look out for new engaging narrators who don't ham up or over act and detract from the source material. Rest assured I will now be on the look out for more books narrated by Abdalla!
As an armchair spectator of the Egyptian revolution safely watching from a distance I had no inkling of what it was like for those on the ground fighting so hard for liberty and hope and the future of their children, nor could I understand the devastation of those same people when their hopes and dreams that were so close to realisation were torn away from them in violence, bloodshed, torture, murder and imprisonment without trial.
To read this book or listen to this beautifully read audiobook is to get an insight into the lives and minds of those everyday people who fought so bravely for what they believed and to feel in some small way the devastation they must have felt when it was taken away. I was crushed by the sense of loss they must have felt and shocked by the violence and brutality they faced, but I have hope that people like Omar are prepared to tell the tale and will continue to fight for what they believe is right.
I cannot recommend this audiobook highly enough, beautifully written and exquisitely narrated it transports you from the cafes, bars and apartments where the revolutionaries plotted their next moves to the cheers, sweat, smoke, debris, knives, blood and bullets of the streets where there plans were enacted and ultimately to the morgue where so many of the young revolutionaries ended up .
Exceptional - more from Mr Hamilton and Mr Abdalla please!
