Summary

When Apollo Kagwa was just a child, his father disappeared, leaving him with recurring nightmares and a box labelled 'Improbabilia'. Now a successful book dealer, Kagwa has a family of his own after meeting and falling in love with Emma, a librarian. The two marry and have a baby: so far so happy-ever-after. However, as the pair settle into their new lives as parents, exhaustion and anxiety start to take their toll. Emma's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, until one day she commits an unthinkable act, setting Apollo on a wild and fantastical quest through a suddenly otherworldly New York, in search of a wife and child he no longer recognises.

An epic novel for our anxiety-ridden times, The Changeling is a tale of parenthood, love - in its most raw and brutal form - and, ultimately, humanity.

Astonishing

Loved this book. Magical realism and thought provoking. Couldn’t stop listening to it and beautifully read by the author.

Dark fantasy, unusual storyline... it brilliant.

Don't hate me but I started off watching the AppleTV version. Although I thought it was good, it was also left with an odd and confusing 'cliffhanger'.
When a novel is read by the author it is always delivered exactly the way it is meant for the listener.
The story is definitely different, and delivered it such a great way that you are drawn in with the characters , backstories, folk tales, politics, migration, discrimination, magic, this book seems ro have everything.

Loved it, will definitely explore more f Lavalles book.

My new favourite LaValle novel

Mesmerising, great performance by the author. I think I’ll try to read (or listen to) everything he writes.

wonderfully engrossing

I haven't read (or listened to) anything else by the author but I loved this. The character's, even the minor ones, felt absolutely real, and their stories were captivating. I haven't read very much that would be similarly classified as this genre-wise but I loved the way the author brought together the mundane (and not so mundane) of parenting, being a child, and a new parent, and a partner, with the otherworldly, the folding of folklore into a contemporary story in such way that doesn't feel awkward or tacky.

The performance by the author was great, very natural, and easy to lose yourself to.

Struggled to finish it

unnecessarily long winded. unconvincing and naive. of course literature is a very individual beast but I have to say I prayed for it to end. the actual characters are good but the story just feels jigsawed, the language naive at points and the narrator a little monotone (audio book). I have a little experience of audio books so I don't think it was solely that. Sorry Mr author.
