About this listen

London, 2120. Frankie dreams of being promoted from undercover police officer to super-powered crime fighter. Could her new mission to spy on a secret cabal of highly-skilled rebels in a poverty zone be her chance to impress her boss?

No. No, it could not.

Because the rebels are just a group of hapless hippies and hysterics attempting to survive in the hellscape. And the Catford Zone is a wild chaos of glitching brain implants and mutant insects where people can only live in the top floors of buildings because below is deadly. And then one of her new housemates tries to drill a hole in her brain as an ‘experiment’. Just surviving is pushing Frankie to her limits.

Her AI bot boss won’t let her leave until she’s completed the mission, but how can she when there’s no mission to complete?

And what’s so dangerous at ground level?

The Catford Catastrophe Zone is a funny, exhilarating dystopian science fiction thriller with unforgettable characters set in a world that is rapidly devouring itself.

Entertaining characters in an intriguing world

I didn't know what to expect from this book, having never read this author before, but I was pleasantly surprised. This book is funny and entertaining but also has a point to make with its satire on society. I was quickly drawn into the story and finished it in three days, which is fast for me. The reader brought the characters to life well and I really enjoyed the TV sections, which made me laugh out loud several times. This is one I'll definitely be listening to again.

Immersive, dystopian, character-led rollercoaster of a story.

I was drawn to this story after listening to Rufus Penzances' other work on the "worst writer in the world" podcast. This was my first fictional audiobook, and it was a treat.
The world building was excellent and evocative, although for me the social commentary was a little too on the nose at times.
The dark dystopian theming had wonderful light edges that kept my Interest.
Really enjoyed the character work, and the perspective shifts during the chapters, and I'd love to dig deeper into them if Petra ever writes more.
Overall, really enjoyed it, and will look for more work written by Petra Jacob, or read by Rufus Penzance.

Believable, likeable characters

Well imagined story of life in the future, it’s not hard to see how this could happen in our society. Loved the narrator, fast paced and believable characterisations. Would recommend to anyone who likes Sci-Fi dystopian or fantasy.
