Summary

An elderly woman dies mysteriously, and her priceless pink diamond disappears. Her granddaughter, Sylvia, wants the jewel found and hires Lucy James, Reno detective. The hunt for the diamond, called the Pink Carbuncle, takes them to Spain and Morocco with varying degrees of success and the bad guys hot on their trail.

Clues from the grandmother's stories of gypsies and Arabian princesses converge with those of a former choir boy and a nun. They travel on camels in Morocco and encounter speeding cars in Barcelona. Tipsters attempt to throw Lucy and Sylvia off track, but with help from friendly Spaniards, the women travel through deserts, mountains, and fanciful foreign locations in their pursuit of the pink diamond. But not all roads lead to Rome, and Lucy and Sylvia must come home where they meet their biggest challenge of all.

Diamond in the ruff

I did enjoy this book but I was disappointed with it. This is book five in the series and is very different to the previous books, unfortunately for me it just didn't work. There was no mystery, well okay there was but very little investigation or channelling Sherlock Holmes and it was more a case of blindly going were told. Also because Lucy was traveling all over the world the side characters/ dog and the second job at the cinema were sadly missing, which is a big part of where the fun and humour can be found in the series. The ending was a bit flat. However I did like the introduction of the new characters and look forward to seeing if they make an appearance in the next book and for the old ones returning. Lucy has also grown as a character and is a lot more confident. The story is told by the two main characters, starting with who's perspective each chapter is about and I think this works well for the story as things don't need to get explained twice when they are not together.
With her best friend busy preparing for the arrival of her first child, Lucy James takes up self defence classes. Where she lets a new friend, Sylvia. When Sylvia's grandmother dies suddenly and her jewerly missing, she hires Lucy to find her grandmother prize possession, which should have been locked up in the bank vault. The diamond has a long and varied history and not just the stories her grandmother good her. Can Lucy and Sylvia find the pink gem or does the stone have another adventure and story to tell?
The narrator was okay and did do a good job of giving each character a voice but with another change of narrator and still having the previous voice in my head, I had to get use to the new sounding characters.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Travel & Changes

In this fifth book of the series, Lucy James has partnered with Sylvia to travel to exotic places like Spain and Morocco in search of a rare pink diamond. The story is filled with twists and turns creating a puzzle to try and figure out what has happened to the pink diamond. I enjoyed the story. Andrea Webster's narration was fine and her voice was pleasing. I requested this audiobook from Audiobooks Unleashed and I have voluntarily left this review.
