About this listen

Not all widows are elderly...and not all ladies are proper.

If one more person gives Rosemary Lillywhite unwanted advice on when to stop mourning the loss of her beloved husband, she fears she will lose control of her sensibilities.

All she wants is to be left alone to drown her misery in a glass of gin and tonic, but when Grace Barton knocks on the door of her dead husband’s investigative office, Rosemary faces a choice: come out of hiding, or turn away someone in need of help.

As Grace recounts her tale of intrigue, Rosemary discovers a shared connection with the woman that has her accepting an invitation she'd just as soon turn down.

With her best friend—bright young thing Vera Blackburn—by her side, Rosemary trades her widow weeds for a party dress and heads to a fancy do at Barton Manor.

The drinks flow freely, but there’s an undercurrent of unease until finally, the night ends in murder—one in which Rosemary's brother becomes the prime suspect!

What’s worse, the handsome chief inspector on the case is a man she knows well: he was her husband’s best mate, and he takes a dim view of lady detectives—or perhaps just of Rosemary becoming one.

What will it take for Rosemary to solve the crime before her brother hangs for a murder he didn’t commit?

Book one in The Mrs. Lillywhite Investigates series.

An excellent start to an enjoyable series

I’m a fan of cosy crime in general, and I have previously enjoyed The Case at Barton Manor as an ebook, so I was pleased to listen to the audiobook.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The writing is excellent. For the first book in the series, I thought it did an excellent job of convey the world that Rosemary lives in, and the people who inhabit it, without long stretches of description.

The characterisation is also excellent, I took to Rosemary immediately, and her grief over losing her husband (some time before the start of the book) was delicately handled, and didn’t weigh the story down. I also liked Vera very much, though she appears frivolous at a glance, she is always there for Rosemary.

The plot is well conceived and executed. The mystery starts off small, and it was great fun to try and figure it out alongside Rosemary and her friends.

The narration is good. It took me a little while to get my ear in, as the accent is so very RP. But this didn’t take long, and once I did the narrator really brought the story to life. She did an excellent job of both the female and male voices, without anyone being shrill, shouty, or hoarse.

In conclusion, this was an excellent start to a very enjoyable series, narrated by a skilled narrator. I look forward to listening to the rest of the series.

I was given a copy of this audiobook, my opinions are my own.

A charming mystery

A charming mystery set in the 1920s. I loved the main characters and the clever murder plot that kept me guessing. I enjoy a slow burn romance that develops over the course of a series, so I'm looking forward to reading what happens with Rosemary and the Detective and further cases they solve together. The narration is excellent and elevated my enjoyment of the novel.
I received a gifted copy and this is my unbiased and voluntary opinion.

Well written story with an excellent narration.

This story is a delight for fans of Miss Fisher Mystery on TV. It is a well-written, easy to listen to story with a great cast of characters. The author does a wonderful job of creating vivid descriptions of people and places that make you feel part of the story. The narrator has a beautiful voice that enhances the experience, and she brings the story to life with her exceptional narration.
I received this arc for free and I wanted to leave an honest review.
