About this listen

With enemies advancing on all sides and Cardinal Richelieu's health failing, France is at breaking point. Yet salvation may arrive in the most unlikely form....

Born into poverty and with terrible deformities, Sebastian Morra is a dwarf with the wit of Tyrion Lannister and three foot, four inches of brazen pluck. Through a mixture of brains and luck, he has travelled far from his village to become a jester at the royal court. And with a talent for making enemies, he is soon drawn into the twilight world of Cardinal Richelieu, where he discovers he might just be the only man with the talents to save France from her deadliest foes.

Fascinating approach

A very original, well researched tale. The author has made a brilliant job of slicing through the France of Louis XIII in Richelieu's latter years to reveal it from differing viewpoints, via the eyes of an unusual hero - a dwarf - as we follow the varied successes and horrors of his life from bullied peasant boy to the royal court, & introduction to one of the most powerful men of the time, Cardinal Richelieu... and beyond. My curiosity was such that I couldn't resist reading up some of the history of the time but I recommend that you wait, hear the book out first!

Starts well then becomes incredibly dull

I thought this sounded an interesting title and the first couple of hours held my attention well. Then, for reasons I don’t really understand, I felt it lost impetus and I struggled to remain attentive.

The narration is solid enough, but I gave up and abandoned the title. Very disappointing.
