About this listen

A fight to the death in foreign seas....

1940

Scarred—physically and emotionally—by the brutal warfare at Dunkirk, Jack Pembroke decides to leave his home in England to join his father, Admiral Pembroke, in the South African Cape.

A fledgling naval force is preparing to fight the coming onslaught of German raiders, and Jack is soon thrust back into action when he is appointed commander of a minesweeping flotilla. Unknown to Jack, a Nazi commerce raider has left Germany for the Cape intending to wreak havoc on Allied shipping.

And it's heading straight for him....

Under Jack's command are an eclectic bunch of men who are unsure of their foreign captain. But he must unite them into a powerful fighting unit if he has any chance of defeating the dangerous enemy.

Can Jack overcome his demons and lead his men to victory? Or will his first battle off the South African coast be his last...?

My experience

Pity the narrator did not understand much of the subject, too much mispronunciation of common English words. It seemed as if English may not be his first language. Good story and good overall experience.

Character interaction

Story built slowly. It's a talent of relationships formed under duress. Very believable & entertaining.

À good tale, set in a real background

A less well known part of the WW2 story, this tale is well crafted and well told. The narrator did a good job, an easy voice to listen to, with good characterisation. Spoiled only by his poor attempt at a Scottish accent, and the several bizarre mispronunciations ! (For thé record, I’m British, and a native British English speaker

Excellent

I came across this by chance and found a gripping hard hitting and superbly told story of naval warfare. Highly recommend.

naval war in South Africa

this is an interesting insight into an untold part of World War II is it a bit of a slow burner but has just enough action to keep the story interesting I would say this is a story about the people as well as the events I look forward to reading more in the series

Narration iffy accents and robotic delivery

The story is ok but clumsy metaphors jar almost as much as the second rate delivery. The narrator attempts upper class English and some sort of Scottish accent for characters but only succeeds in irritating the discerning listener. Pronunciation of other words whilst narrating are also jarring whilst at times one could assume this is some sort of AI failure as the rhythm of speech is so stilted and awkward.
