Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
A new way of thinking about cancel culture and the much-needed antidote for our dangerous and divisive times
Cancel culture isn't just a moral panic: it erodes our ability to argue productively, listen generously and to be civil when we disagree. Whether on university campuses, in the workplace or on social media, it is a dysfunctional part of how individuals battle for power, status, and dominance. It's just one symptom of a much larger problem: why bother refuting your opponents, when you can just take away their platform or career?
In this book, Lukianoff and Shlott analyze the pervasive effects of cancel culture, drawing on original research and data, along with hundreds of new examples showing how the left and the right both work to silence their enemies in different ways.
Eye-opening, urgent and transformative, The Canceling of the American Mind offers concrete steps towards reclaiming a culture of free speech, with materials specifically tailored for parents, teachers, business leaders and all those who use social media. It shows how we can all harness intellectual humility to become more resilient and open minded.

Critic reviews
'Cancel Culture is one of the worst scourges of modern woke-ravaged society. This important and very timely book explains what it is, how it works, and how best to deal with it.' (Piers Morgan)
'The growing regime of censorship, slander, and punishment against anyone who questions establishment orthodoxy is locking us into error and corroding the credibility of our institutions. No one has documented the facts and causes of this alarming trend more thoroughly than Greg Lukianoff, joined here by a collaborator, Rikki Schlott.' (Steven Pinker)
'Cancel Culture is very real and very dangerous - and this book is the most comprehensive look at the rot threatening our institutions and freedoms.' (Ben Shapiro)

Important content. Better to read than listen to.
Unfortunately, the pitch and intonation of the reader made this book almost unlistenable for me. Definitely worth reading though.

Very Eye Opening
Free speech has become an issue I hear about being parroted quite often on the political right and left with little elaboration other than trigger words, this book provides some very detailed and impartial elaboration on what the issue is and how we can avoid letting it get worse.

Insightful compilation of case studies
I really liked the theme and the fact that the authors weren't afraid to peal back all the layers even though the topics are sensitive and complex. The case studies were factual, compelling and indicative of some extreme behaviours and reactions that are impacting American culture but that are also permeating the discourse in other regions of the globe. The reading felt a bit rushed, not paused enough to assess the gravity of the situations or the numbers being presented. Otherwise quite a good and insightful reading.

Acceptance and discussion
If you care about the free market of ideas and the strength of open discourse then this book is both important and a warning. I hope that in 100 years we can look back on this book and feel that it was unnecessary but I fear that too few people are truly listening to the challenges to free speech at this time.

Horrible narration
The speed and rhythm made this my worst listening ever. Buy the book, it is really good 🤪

Meh
Given his previous work i was hoping for more from GL. There was nothing new or of interest here. The co-author's voice was shrill and really jarring. All in all, i wish i hadn't bothered, it was a waste of a credit
