Summary

Lawrence Block's talent for creating colorful characters, sophisticated dialog, and engaging atmosphere has earned him many awards: the title of Grand Master, three Edgar Awards, four Shamus Awards, and a Nero Wolfe Award. One of his most popular series follows the adventures of the suave bookseller and crook, Bernie Rhodenbarr.

Bernie's sweetheart has dumped him. But although his heart is broken, he hasn't lost his love for fine books - or for an occasional discrete burglary. So Bernie takes off for a snowy winter weekend at a country inn that just happens to have a rare, signed first edition of The Big Sleep in its library. It's not long, however, before Bernie's ex-girlfriend arrives with her new husband, a body is found in the library, and the book disappears. Bernie must sort out a tricky tangle of clues if he has any hope of nabbing the priceless edition for himself. Narrator Richard Ferrone captures Bernie's cool demeanor and his flair for perfect timing.

"Toad in the hole, or Wind in the Willows. "

Or: "Isn't Agatha Christie."

Sheer brilliance.
Bernie Rhodenbarr is a seller of second hand books. He's also a burglar, and funny. When a girlfriend tells him she can't go with him for a romantic weekend at Cuddlesford House, run as an old English country estate, Bernie takes his dog grooming friend, Caroline, and Raffles his car instead.
Cue a remote location approached by a rope secured bridge over a deep gully, and heavy snow making roads inaccessible, and the near perfect closed house mysteries of English writers such as Agatha Christie is set up. With lots of literary references to Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Evelyn Waugh and Agatha herself, delicious dialogue with Caroline and replete with one liners, oddball characters and an intriguing plot with an unexpected ending, this is a book not just to enjoy but to positively revel in. And the narration by Richard Terrine only enhances everything as he becomes Bernie in his excellent performance.

Would I recommend this book? Oh, yes

Good, but not his best

I love the Bernie Rhodenbarr series; it is blithe and amusing and beautifully written - just what we need in this post-Covid era - but this is not his best. The story is a bit of a cheat, all the elements not really hanging together or giving the satisfaction of his usual clever dénouements. Richard Ferrone reads as wonderfully as ever, though, and it IS pure escapism, if that’s what you’re after.

perfect

Maybe the characters are a bit more clichéd than usual for Mr Block's work, but, seeing as the Bernie Rhodenbarr books are by far and away in a league of their own this is entirely forgiveable.
Bernie and Carolyn travel well and even Raffles plays his part.
Wonderful.
