About this listen

BURIED GOLD, OLD BONES.
WHAT SECRETS LURK IN THE DEPTHS?

A masterclass of small-town mystery and jaw-dropping twists from Chris Hammer, the international bestselling author of Scrublands, The Times Crime Book of the Year 2023 Dead Man's Creek and Crime Book of the Month (January 2024) Cover the Bones.

A body has been discovered on the riverbanks of The Valley, a remote community in the hills of New South Wales. The gold mine at the heart of The Valley was once the lifeblood of this region, but it has been flooded for decades. Over the years, many have tried and failed to bring it back to life. Now, most believe the mine is barren.

The victim is Wolfgang Burnside, deputy mayor - a champion of change or local schemer, depending on who you ask. He had been working on plans to take the Valley off-grid with hydro-power using the lake surrounding the abandoned mine. Until he was poisoned, his body dumped in the river for all to see.

Detectives Nell Buchanan and Ivan Lucic are dispatched to investigate. The warning is clear - there are secrets lurking in the depths of this Valley, secrets worth more than their weight in gold. What price will this town have to pay to ensure that they never see the light of day?

An epic, atmospheric mystery spanning generations set against a luscious backdrop and the twisting veins of gold that lurk beneath.

Amazing Story.

Another absolutely enthralling mystery in the Ivan Lucia & Nell Buchanan series. Slow burning and intricate at first but utterly unputdownable and completely absorbing.
With each new book we are learning so much about the family history of the Detectives.
I cannot wait for the next instalment and hope it is soon.
Great storylines, wonderfully written by Chris Hammer and amazing narration by Lockie Chapman.

Compelling

Fab continuation of Nell's story, with support from Ivan of course. I had to concentrate as there are a lot of charactrrs; the two timelines work well. Amazing narration by Lockie Chapman, as always. Hugely, highly recommended. Fingers crossed for another book.

Brilliant

Everything about this book is so good. The details and plot are excellent and the reader is just perfect. I tried not to rush my listening as I didn't want it to end but it's over and there will be a wait for Chris Hammer's next book.

intrigue

What a story teller Chris Hammer is. Love the duel narrative. Love the characters. Would like to know some of Ivan's flaws/ history and not just Nell's.

Great story

Good to have Nell Buchanan’s story further explored. Great descriptions of the landscape and complexities of the crime. Glad that the same narrator was retained. Very well performed.

Fabulous narration of a story that keeps you guessing till the end!

A story that doesn't disappoint...full of twists that only get more complex the more you listen. The narration is just fabulous, really brings the story to life - author and narrator are both masters of their craft!

Enthralling yarn

Thoroughly enjoyed this story and its performance by Lochie Chapman. Initially I didn’t realise about the 2 different time lines. A physical book would have obvious chapter headings rather than a hasty spoken date. However it is an excellent story with lots of twists and turns. The book does require a degree of concentration as there are lots of characters some appearing in both times. As ever Chris Hammer has written an excellent book which was recommended recently as Crime Book of the Week in the Saturday Times.
