Not a balanced account of the British Empire
I appreciate the audiobook is under four hours and cannot get bogged down with too much detail, but there is lots of important nuance and context missing throughout. The general theme of the book is the British Empire was bad and anything good it did is a mere footnote. For example, the author rightly goes into depth about the atrocities of slavery – but Britain's role in ending the slave trade worldwide is only briefly mentioned. You cannot claim the British economy greatly benefited from slavery but not come up with data to support this. In a bizarre end to the book, the author claims that Brexit and the British Royal Family are both highly controversial when polling data shows otherwise.
