Summary

Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax) stars in the second episode of the award-winning The Brenda and Effie Mysteries by Paul Magrs (Doctor Who).

Welcome back to Whitby! Come and join Brenda and Effie for a night out at the Christmas Hotel, where a once-famous ventriloquist delights in causing chaos and putting the willies up old women.

Why does long-eared bat puppet Tolstoy seem eerily alive of his own accord? Why is Brenda walking about the harbour at night in only her night things? And what is the secret of the olde-worlde toyshop tucked up an alleyway in Robin Hood's Bay?

There is strangeness occuring at the seaside, and our heroines will be forced, once more, to beat off the forces of darkness before the night is through.

Winner of Best Audiobook at the 2015 New York Radio Awards.

Critic reviews

"If there's a better way of spending just over an hour of your time, then I've yet to find it." ( Mass Movement Magazine)
"An overly aggressive puppet and a toy shop with a secret...that's the way to do it! 8/10." ( Sci-Fi Bulletin)
"This is excellent. The prose sparkles, Anne Reid shines and the incidental sound adds magic to a great story. 9/10." ( Starburst Magazine)

Bat with a bite.

Paul Magrs biting observation underscores the humour and magic of this modern Grimm tale. The corpulent ventriloquist and his creepy toymaker magus are chilling characters. Anne Reid is perfect as are the rest of the cast and the sound production.
