About this listen

Horror is what Dan Law enjoys. He loves to read horror novels as a way to escape from his teaching job, from his loneliness, from the everyday dullness of life in Silver Lake. That’s what Dan lives for. When a new bookstore opens in town, every visitor receives a free book of their own. A book that tells their own personal story...a story they have to follow to the brutal end. As Silver Lake’s population descends into violent savagery, Dan finds he is no longer living for horror novels - he’s living inside one.

If you've read Needful Things......

picked this title from the Plus catalogue. from the first 10 minutes, and throughout, all I could think of was "this is a lot like Needful Things". The plot is okay, and rather predictable. The sheer absence of any authority in the last two thirds of the novel, given the timescales and events, it what makes the story tip to the "yeah, right" side of things.

Jeff Harding is a well-known narrator, with his own style.

Keeps you interested. Gory though be warned!

Really enjoyed the narration, intriguing little tale and kept me curious. It’s like it was written just for me, a story just for me!

Nice horror…

… story with good performance from the narrator. Not a slow burner, but a gripping one, right from the start. It leaved an open ending to me, but such is the nature of evil. :)

Absolute Chaos

As a big horror fan I saw this in the plus catelogue so figured why not. I was so glad I did, its a gem!
A great horror giving each character their own story and all the while making the reader wonder how events will end/if they will end. Don't take it too seriously just enjoy the wild ride not everything has a deep meaning. The narrator Jeff Harding does a wonderful job of being not only engaging but capturing the characters personalities. Well worth the listen for any horror fan.

Exactly not what I expected, but Exactly what I needed. Not quite what I'm into normally, glad I picked it, couldn't put it down!

Brilliant

Being a lover of horror stories that is one of the best I have listened to. So descriptive you could see the devastation as you were listening. Very strong characters

Great story but narrator let it down

As a bibliophile this one was definitely a scary thought! An intriguing take on how books can affect the masses and kept me interested, needing to keep listening to know how it ended, just like the characters!
Unfortunately the narrator and his upspeak, unusual and over zealous intonation did irritate me. I kept listening because I loved the storyline, but it bugged me even so.

a specific type of taste

Like psychological small-town horror, look no further! Especially if you like a sprinkling of gruesome descriptions.

Weird and Wonderful

A clever concept for some gory, chaotic dystopia in an American town, and I found the storyline compelling, the writing good, and great to hear the lovely voice of Jeff Harding again.
I enjoy these 'evil spirit' type happenings, as I am an advocate of C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters. And I like to see how various secular ideas match some Scriptural instances.
