Follow in the footsteps of Rudgard Howe, an enforcer cadet who, while on their first mission and embroiled in an embittered succession battle back home, uncovers a heinous sanguinary cult....

The story: on the capital world of Potence, young enforcer cadet Rudgard Howe is caught up in a bitter internecine feud to inherit his father's position of chief enforcer. As the tithe fleets approach, he is sent on his first mission to ensure that the planet's distant agri-facilities fulfil their quotas to the god-emperor. Farmed with serfs and managed by ex-Militarum soldiers, the agri-facilities are places of shocking brutality and hopelessness. But when he is sent to the outlying farmstead of Thorsarbour, Rudgard discovers a community where the crops are left to rot as the inhabitants indulge in the bloody ecstasy of a sanguinary cult. As Rudgard imposes the strict Lex Imperialis upon the farmstead, he begins to uncover a place where sanity is rapidly slipping. Just a single step into his nightmarish mission though, a series of cruel deaths threatens to dismantle everything he has ever known about the Imperium, his faith in the emperor and the strength of his very soul.

A Great Horror Short!
Justin D. Hill is quickly becoming one of the better Black Library authors and certainly has a reader for his next work within the worlds of Warhammer 40k and beyond!

Nailed it.
JDHill nails it author had more freedom from GW than normal. Good narration. Bad editing.

Horrific not horror
The casual and callous treatment of the workers, indentured and enslaved, the whimsical notions of fratricide, there is no worse horror in WH40K, Howe is no more likeable or heroical in this book than his last appearance, the author has told a simple tale but told it well, the narrator took a bit of getting used to but once I did I enjoyed his style

Is this a horror ?
Can't really call this story a horror. However found this enjoyable. I would more call this a crime novel/thriller with a spooky twist. The narration was great. I like 40k fiction that is away from the typical battlefield type stories. my god being alive in the imperium is a brilliantly depressing place which the narrator hit the nail on the head with. It's a good short story, ideal if you didn't want a marathon session, the suspense in the audio book was very good. Really enjoyed it!

horror 40k the perfect mix.
This was a relatively short but horrifying and compelling story, the imagery was both fantastic and horrific!
Mr Hill you have hut ut out of the park!

Rapidly becoming one of my fave authors
After delivering the absolute disgusting reality of life in the underhive witth terminal overkill i was intrigued to see how Justin's horror held up. He doesn't disappoint. He has a flare for picking up on the details of life in the 40k universe that often go overlooked. Twice now creating real spaces in this fiction that feel lived in rather than just a setting. I cannot wait to see what he does next!

Really enjoyed it
I have been a big fan of 40k for some decades now and I have really enjoyed getting snippets of lore from White Dwarf, Codex or rule books. I had always thought that in the 40k universe, if I had to choose, I would pick an Agri world to live. this book shatters that. This is grimdark. A well written story and very well read.

middle of the road, but fun horror
enjoyable listen too, as always Matthew Hunt is superb as a narrator.
The story is interesting and a definite change from the previous horror entailments, a good book but nothing special.
I would recommend giving it a listen if you've got a free credit and like the Warhammer Horror books. Overall, I give it 3/5
