About this listen
A surreal exploration of one woman's life and death against a landscape of meat, office desks, and bad men
The Book of X tells the tale of Cassie, a girl born with her stomach twisted in the shape of a knot. From childhood with her parents on the family meat farm, to a desk job in the city, to finally experiencing love, she grapples with her body, men, and society, all the while imagining a softer world than the one she is in. Twining the drama of the everyday - school-age crushes, paying bills, the sickness of parents - with the surreal-rivers of thighs, men for sale, and fields of throats - Cassie's realities alternate to create a blurred, fantastic world of haunting beauty.

Good imagery
I couldn’t get into the book, I found myself getting confused. I still am not sure if she had the baby or not.

Surreal
Weirdest book I’ve consumed so far this year. Not entirely sure whether I liked it or not, but I enjoyed the narration and the pace. I also enjoyed the weird surreal ‘visions’, which I interpreted as poetic.

STUNNING
Cassie the main character is born with a stomach twisted into the shape of a knot. A short but brilliant audiobook about her struggles through life, in a world familiar but not familiar. For instance, her father and brother farm meat that comes out of the ground, this is never explained and there are some incredible passages of surrealism that are perplexing. Don't let this put you off, as you listen it all makes sense of sorts, in one of the most original books I have listened to in a very long time. Added bonus it is free to members.
