About this listen

When the æristocracy decides to withdraw their blimps from the Venusian economy and head back to an abandoned Earth, the surf-turned-æristocrat Sir Thomas begins tearing down their entire economy in order to save millions of lives.

A dystopian sci-fi about class warfare, The Blimps of Venus shows us the true motives behind eugenics and other evils.

"Schaubert's narratives are emotionally stirring with both a vulnerable sensibility and rawness to them. They take you on a journey full of open wounds, intimate successes, and personal delights. His words have a calmness, a natural ease, but the meaning is always commanding and dynamic." (Natalie Gee, Brooklyn Film Festival)

A nice dip below the clouds

While not necessarily conveying the depth of some of this author’s other works, The Blimps of Venus was nevertheless a worthwhile use of an hour.
The story ably demonstrates the consequences of your decisions and what can happen when you don’t have a complete picture, but the story struggled to really engage, with several elements that felt like attempts to elicit a shocking or surprising reaction.
The performance wasn’t particularly memorable, but wasn’t bad per se. The main issue was some of the reading was oddly paced, with pauses and run-ons that seemed like the reader wasn’t that practiced with the text.
A better fare than many short stories, but not one of Schaubert’s greatest.
