Summary
1326: Queen Isabella refuses to leave France and humiliates her husband, King Edward II, by flaunting her adulterous relationship with the arch-traitor Sir Roger Mortimer. The King is furious when he hears she has also betrothed their son to the daughter of the French Count of Hainault, and all England fears invasion. As news of an invasion fleet is received, the King’s knights, including Sir Baldwin de Furnshill, are commanded to London to protect the King and his realm.
Meanwhile Bishop Stapledon, the Treasurer of England, is under threat - but from whom? He has made many enemies, and Baldwin and ex-bailiff Simon Puttock must do all they can to find the would-be assassin before it’s too late.

great account of the descent of a nation
the Tyranny of Edward II is only really taught (where at all) as an adjunct to the stories of his wife, Mortimer and Edward III or the foreign relations with Scotland and France. Rarely are the pressures on the people of England studied as the nation collapsed into anarchy, violence and civil war. Jecks does a great job of representing rhe complexities, nuances and difficulties faced by families faced with an impossible choice and when the rule if law can no longer be trusted, ripped apart by corruption.
in a recent survey, 36% of Americans now believe that political violence is an acceptable means to delived political ambitions. Terrifyingly, this has increased from under 8% only 2 years ago and is uniform across political parties.
this book, as well as being highly entertaining, should stand out as a warning for those who are stupid enough to favour violence over discource.
those who do not learn from History are destined to repeat it and sadly, very little history has been taught effectively foe some decades now, which is why we appear to be on a one way trip back to the anarchy ajd chaos of political violence and potential civil war.

A promising start but soon failed.
The story began well but soon failed to be satisfactory.
The narrator had a tedious voice.
