About this listen

One of the biggest scores in Mafia history, the Lufthansa Airlines heist of 1978 has become the stuff of Mafia legend - and a decades-long investigation that continues to this day. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Anthony DeStefano sheds new light on this legendary unsolved case using recent evidence from the 2015 trial of 80-year-old Mafia don Vincent Asaro, who for the first time speaks out on his role in the fateful Lufthansa heist. This blistering you-are-there account takes you behind the headlines and inside the ranks of America's infamous crime families - with never-before-told stories, late-breaking news, and bombshell revelations.

An invaluable addition to any crime library, this is the most complete, thorough, and up-to-date account of the Lufthansa heist currently available. Pulitzer Prize winner Anthony DeStefano draws from his years of experience reporting on the mob for New York Newsday - as well as his firsthand coverage of the Asaro indictment and attendance at the trial - to expose the all-too-human heart of organized crime in America. The Big Heist is thrilling, shocking, and impossible to pause.

Very Informative

I didn't know much about this heist but this book is very informative and interesting, it didn't end well for all mafia members involved.

Good insight into the mafia activities

This was a quite laborious book to listen to and finish, but it gave a fascinating insight into the mafia beyond what you see in the movies. It was let down by a ponderous and convoluted story, and a very wooden and dry narration. However, I still found it interesting and informative.

Strange Behaviour

Not much into Mafia stories but as this was based on truth I thought I would give it a listen.

What seemed strange to me and not just a reflection on this book but others I have listened to or movies I have seen, is that the mafia themselves and to a greater degree there downfall, is that they fight amongst themselves and kill each other off, strange! Instead of adopting a more structured route like large multi-nationals who use and bend the law for their own benefit, Just seems strange when they could have achieved so much more…

Other then the obvious it was an insight and an interesting read

An epilogue for goodfellas

Decent book that deals with the planning, the heist itself and the aftermath. As an avid mob book reader this surprised me as a lot of mob books lately don’t cut the mustard.

Boring and stilted

I'm glad it was included and I didn't use a token. I came to it with high hopes because I like the topic generally and the idea seemed good. I was wary at an early stage when the narrator advised that the book would be split into three parts with the first part going back over the history that leads up to the crime itself. Once we were part way into that section, I was proved right. It seemed to ramble off on some half-baked historical narrative that didn't connect to anything that we were interested in and for as long as I listened to it, didn't connect to anything to do with the story. I found the whole thing bloated and boring but worse, seeming to have no direction at all. I gave it up after 5 or 6 chapters.
