Summary

Desperate for a new life, one woman engineers a cunning deception that quickly spins out of control... Angela Harper's life has never been simple. She's an orphan who spent her childhood in foster homes. Her handsome, charming husband Billy can’t hold down a job. And they’re both stuck in a grimy London flat with no prospects for their future beyond the periodic welfare check. That is, until Ange concocts a lie that will change their lives.

Her con targets the wealthy, twice-divorced businessman Fabian Ormerod, whom, with the approval of her husband, she is determined to trick into a very advantageous marriage - with a quick divorce to follow. Gillian White's cutting, sardonic style unfurls in The Beggar Bride, as she needles England’s stiff upper crust, the titans of business, and the idle poor below them.

A good story -but not the authors best’. Poor narration

The story has an interesting, although flawed plot. However I enjoyed the story
And looked forward to listening to it in the evening.
One of the flaws was too much repetition of the characters back stories.which became monotonous. sadly, it was the narrators voice which spoiled the book for me. Her tone of voice sounded like that of a child which was not appropriate for this story. In addition, she was unable to differentiate voices between the characters. I think of this book is re-published a different narrator is essential It is very important in audible books to choose the correct reader as this makes a great difference for sales. I still like the writer and whether to try another of her books if it is not the same Loreta as this one.

Can't take any more

Love this author and intended to listen to all of her books... Great I got them free on Audble and have loved all I've listened to so far. Often with these old recordings the orators aren't very good but somehow with such great writing you can carry on and still enjoy a book even if the narration isn't up to what we expect.
Loved the idea of this situation this young woman finds herself in and love her great idea. But this book is extremely unrealisted and very far fetched, it could never happen and too many flaws in the story which could never happen in real life. Fine I continued to listen... I wanted to know what came next........
Bad very bad narration and way too fast and ignoring full stops etc... I didn't know where the story was going and also a lot of different characters... Love the main character and her determination...
Had to quit three hours before the end because I don't have the patience to listen to all ramblings ...
Fools a highly intelligent and very well educated man into marrying her... no family of her own, works away a lot, -- did he never ask to see proof of her earnings or allow him to see her work ?
The wedding dress and clothing stolen from the other residents in the hotel ???? Ridiculous ... and where did her wedding shoes come from? Were they also stolen ? and how on earth could they be her size?
Nope ... given up.
