Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of Mexican Gothic comes a sweeping romance rich with love and betrayal, with more than a dash of magic.

They are the Beautiful Ones, Loisail's most notable socialites, and this spring is Nina's chance to join their ranks, courtesy of her well connected cousin and his calculating wife. But the Grand Season has just begun and already Nina's debut has gone disastrously awry. She has always struggled to control her telekinesis: the haphazard manifestations of her powers have long made her the subject of gossip - malicious neighbours even call her the Witch of Oldhouse.

But Nina's life is about to change, for there is a new arrival in town: Hector Auvray, the renowned entertainer, who has used his own telekinetic talent to perform for admiring audiences around the world. Nina is dazzled by Hector, for he sees her not as a witch, but ripe with magical potential. Under his tutelage, Nina's talent blossoms - as does her love for the great man.

But great romances are for fairy-tales and Hector is hiding a secret bitter truth from Nina - and himself - that threatens their courtship.

The Beautiful Ones is a charming tale of love and betrayal and the struggle between conformity and passion, set in a world where scandal is a razor-sharp weapon.

Beautiful, slow burn romance with a hint of magic

An easy listen. A beautifully written story with just enough tension to keep it interesting. A wonderful performance by the VA.

An engaging novel

An enjoyable novel from start to finish, Nina was a charming character if not a little naïve and I rooted for her from the start. Valerie was a nasty piece of work which ultimately ensured her undoing...hurrah!
Beautifully read by Imani Jade Powers.

chapter 21 at the end of part one is missing

Great book and wonderfully read. However, there's one entire chapter missing, I believe. What a pity.

A truly wonderful novel

This was another superb novel by this author. She writes such different books and this romantic novel with a touch of the paranormal further cemented her reputation for me.

Couldn't hold my attention

The writing was beautiful but it just couldn't hold my attention. I was really disappointed because of how everyone said how amazing this book is. I wish it resonated more with me.

This book blew me away!

This book ... well where does one start, except to say that it's the best book I have read in a very long time!

The writing is superb so much so that you can smell the roses, hear the flutter of the beetle and see its color.

The descriptions are out of this world and it very much reminded me of Dr Zhivago (without the sadness) and it tore at my heart strings.

It takes you back to a wonderful imaginery Regency world loosely based on France where cars exist and where manners maketh man.

It is not your normal run of the mill love affair but there are broken hearts strewn about and you are captivated from the start and won't be able to stop until the end.

The characters are beautifully drawn, with Hector returning to see the love of his life, unexpectedly meeting her cousin, Nina, who has telekentic powers which he travels the world performing.

There is villainy, goodness, unrequited love, magic and above all, a sense that love always wins in the end.

The narration was superb!

If I could give this book a 10* I would.
