Summary

Take an average family and chuck them in at the deep end....

The Backward Ark is an absorbing insight into the reality of living the tropical cruising dream. Featuring real pirates of the Caribbean, Hurricane Ivan, a stoned Rastafarian Santa, and plenty more besides.

With drama, humour, and lashings of tropical spice, this book will appeal to anyone who has ever looked out of the office window on a cold, grey day, wishing they could escape. As you'll discover, a surprising number of people already have.

Including much that goes beyond the interests of the cruising sailor, The Backward Ark is not a book about boats, it's about bringing a dream to life while trying to navigate the stormy peaks and troughs that inevitably accompany living on the edge.

From land lubber to a competent skipper

A great listen for anyone dreaming of crossing oceans in a sailing boat. Without even having learnt sailing or boat maintenance in a dinghy the author restores a 40ft ketch and takes his family across the Atlantic. Although my feelings were along the lines of "how irresponsible" his redeeming factor was that he is a quick learner and succeeded in all his efforts. Oh, and well done for escaping the rat race and having a great adventure

Thought I wasn't going to enjoy the book at the start but loved it!

You can't help but admire the family and their sense of adventure. The book is so well written you feel as if you're on board living the adventure with them. I highly recommend
