About this listen

Ruethwyn's life was promising. Talented in magic, the young elven woman didn't fit in in her hometown but was scheduled to attend the most renowned academy of magic in the kingdom and was even building up the courage to confess her love in the hope it might be returned.

That all ended in a dragon's fire. Resvarygrath the Gilded, lord of the Golden Dominion, destroyed Ruethwyn's village, killed her parents and teacher, and stole away the young women of the village. Maimed by the dragon's flames, Ruethwyn was spared by a curious dark elf who gave her a chance; she had two years to rescue her beloved or risk losing her forever.

Now, Ruethwyn has little time to recover as best she can. Missing an eye and an arm, her magic half-crippled and her wounds impossible to heal due to a curse, Ruethwyn's prospects at the academy are limited, but she refuses to give up. No matter what challenges she may face, she is determined not to surrender. She's lost too much and refuses to lose another.

First, though, she needs to survive long enough, which proves more challenging than Ruethwyn expects.

Another great spread.

I've read a few Benjamin Medrano novels now and this one didn't disappoint. The narrator is very talented at different accents, Welsh, Scottish etc which makes the story more fun.
If you are looking for girl on girl action though you need to look else where.. These books only explore attraction/love between women set in a magical DD world.
Now off to read the second title. :)

Great Scifi

A gripping story that has you turning g pages to find out what happens next and how the main protagonist will overcome insurmountable odds. Could have done with a little more action and magic though.

never saw the ending coming

I love this trilogy. I love the main character and how she evolves to be a strong character without losing her kindness and naivité. For most stories I can already tell the ending when I"m like halfway through the series but this is one of those series I didn't. The twists and turns it took, left me intrigued and made me want to read more and more.

This story had a really nice reading pace and the narator makes really good work of distingushing between all the characters.

Repetitive & anticlimactic

I really wanted to like this series and hence pushed through all 3 books to give it a fair shot and in hopes that the writing and characters would develop.

The plot idea was a good one but I literally swore out loud when after 3 books worth of dragging the plot out, the ending was so hugely anticlimactic... to the point where I actually read right past the 'big moment' without even realising it, still waiting for the crescendo that never came.

The main character development was alright but there was none that I could see for the supporting characters. We were *told* by the main character that a certain support character or two had developed, which made me laugh. E.g. "She didn't appear to be as shy as when she first arrived"... but there were no actions, etc to back that up, just her saying it.

The writing is extremely dialogue heavy and repetitive. For example, one character notices something, is surprised and then giggles. Every other character in the friend group then literally has the exact same reaction, and the main character responds to each in exactly the same way. Highly irritating.

It also felt like this was written by a man (author name is male sounding but you never know these days, and... pseudonyms). There was just something off about the interactions and relationships between the women. There's no romance or real connection, it's just her 2 female companions randomly dropping a kiss on her. There's no build up, there's no chemistry, just someone saying "I like you" and then a brief kiss that *always* surprises and confuses the main character.

The way the narrator voiced the female characters made them all sound like immature, pubescent teens, which was confusing given that they were supposedly in their 30ies (I get that Elves live longer than humans but 30 years of life would surely still add some maturity).

I won't be reading more from this author or recommending the series based on above.
