About this listen

For over a millennium, the elves have concealed their powers. Until now.

Since arriving on the mortal shores, the elves have systematically colonized the primitive human race. As subjugated peasants, the mortals toil to supply the elven realm with riches.

The elves' magic has degraded their race to a point where they have been rendered infertile. A hundred years ago, they resorted to interbreeding with humans in an effort to preserve their species.

In the elven realm, Jassyn has spent his life both researching the fertility crisis and being forced to produce offspring. His existence balances on a narrow precipice between solving mysteries of the elves' infertility or succumbing to his handlers' maltreatment. A new assignment, tutoring a half-breed princess in a human realm, promises a temporary relief. But he soon discovers the real reason for his presence.

Serenna, Jassyn's new pupil, has earned the right to leave the mortal realm to join the elven courts. Or so she thought. Her anticipated life as a noble takes an unexpected turn when a monstrous race emerges, threatening the existence of all. Instead of joining the elven noble houses, Serenna is conscripted to a military academy for half-breeds.

She learns that not only do half-breeds like her and Jassyn have magic, but that the elves have suppressed all knowledge of their powers. In a race for survival, she must learn how to wield Essence to fight for her life.

With the imminent threat of war, Serenna struggles to master her magic before being thrown on the front lines. Meanwhile, Jassyn strives to protect her, but his forced servitude takes a darker turn, leading him down a destructive path.

The Aelfyn Archives has a new way of seeing a magic system, its a bit hard to figure out at the start but the MFC is new to it all as well so we figure it out together.
the books touch on a lot of sensitive subjects so be sure to check triggers.

something easy to start and finish. the story was visually creative maybe not the most original piece but I would recommend it especially if ur looking to get out of a reading slump. follows romantasy's most loved troupes: war college, mean mmc, newly discovered world, fae, fated mates, loveable bff...ect. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be reading the second book to find out what happened next.

an effortless read

I enjoyed this! It doesn’t come close to the titles it’s being compared to, however, it’s a ok read/listen. I can’t put my finger on what this story needs to put it on par with those mentioned titles, I just know, it’s almost there, it just needs to grow-up some, I guess. It had a good storyline. Good pace! Good character development! Narration was ok. And yet it’s still not in that 5 star + range, for me!!! Maybe it just me… not to much to critique, because it was good. Great?! Not So Much.

Hopefully book #📕 2 will push to that EPIC stage. In-the-meantime this was good listen.

It Was Ok…

Found myself checking how long left in the book wishing it done. Really struggled with this book and did not warm up to the characters. the book however did speed up and was more interesting towards the end.

Lacks a spark

The narrators are really uncomfortable to listen to. Their cadence is really strange and the breathy male narrator sounds really forced.

I loved the story
