About this listen

Three epic LitRPG books, now in one volume!

Before being conscripted to fight in the Total War, Private Hector Park had a shattered family, a collection of old video games, and a promising career as a motorcycle stuntman. Now, he is dying from a virus threatening humankind with extinction. He has three days to live. When Hector’s brother contacts him after years of hostile silence, Hector goes to try and make peace. But his brother offers him something even better: the chance to cheat death by joining him in Archemi, a full-immersion fantasy VR-RPG video game.

Hector undergoes the experimental upload process and chooses the difficult path of the dragon knight. To achieve his dream, he must prove himself worthy of imprinting a dragon, a being with whom he will share a telepathic bond more intimate than any human relationship. But at what cost?

Join Hector as he finds his wings, levels up, and transforms from an aspiring dragon knight to a powerful force of change in his new reality. This omnibus contains three full-length novels, a link to an hour of free audio, and much more!

As I said, really enjoying this story, and for 95% the oration is great, but at times (for realism?) the sound level jumps or worse.. is so muffled I can’t hear what’s being said. Annoyed me so much that I stopped listening to write this review.
It might be acceptable audio in a booth, but parts are impossible to hear while on a bus, or walking near a road.

Great book, spoilt by poor audio levels

Absolutely loved the story and JTJ is a fantastic narrator and voice actor.
The sound effects add a lot to the emersion and I enjoyed it alot.

The only negative thing is when the music in some combat scenes is a bit too loud and it's difficult to hear the narration

Great Story and Great Performance

It starts off as your somewhat typical apocalypse RPG where the end of the world forces everyone dying or about to die into a game like virtual reality.
The voice acting is amazing and each character is very distinct.

The main story takes a little time to develop, but that’s not to say it’s boring or uneventful. It’s definitely not appropriate to listen out loud or with children there are a few comments that’s seem unnecessary and/or pervy but it doesn’t cross any lines.

All said it’s a good listen with a lot of content and worth the listen.

I absolutely loved this trilogy of books. The characters are vibrant and feel authentic, their motivation and goals are well thought out and brilliantly nuanced.

This is some of the best writing in this genre.

A brilliant and epic trilogy!

The potential in this series is endless, however the author doesn’t seem to demonstrate his acknowledgment of this through the story. The arcs are so lack lustre, the unnecessary romance with Suri is boring, don’t even get me started on the cringey sex scenes or erotic references. This series definitely does not need it and would benefit without it exponentially. He already has a bond with his Dragon that is still developing and far from solid. Adding in a romantic interest is completely worthless. It takes fully away from the progression of both Hector and the story.

***Spoilers***

For example, the end of book three is pretty game changing, some rather intense things happen to Hector, he and we learn some pivotal information and instead of proceeding with accepting the updated quest, exploring his new species/abilities, exploring his new leadership menus, training with his Dragon and enhancing their bond, gaining the strength to actually take on his enemies... No!!! He tells the God of Darkness, I’m going to get my girlfriend. So we now have to listen/read to another pointless side mission to retrieve Suri from prison. I struggled with the 2nd and 3rd books, the more the romance and sex increases the worse the story becomes.

If the romance is removed and the focus is back on progression like it was in book 1 then this series will be amazing! The high fantasy, the concept and actual world building is impressive!

The narration and production is amazing! Jeff Hays slays it as always, plus 36 hours/3 Books for 1 credit, one can’t complain but alas, I did; I’m British so it’s my obligatory right to moan right? Haha!

Potential but Cringe
