Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Winner of the 2020 Prix Goncourt. One million copies sold. An international phenomenon.

What do you do if your life is no longer your own?

When flight Air France 006 enters a terrifying storm, the plane—inexplicably—duplicates. For every passenger on board that day, there are now two—a double with the same mind, body and memories.

Just one thing sets them apart. One plane leaves the storm in March. The other doesn't land until June. For world leaders, the emergence of the June flight raises serious alarms. No science, faith, or protocol can explain this unprecedented event.

But for the passengers, a bigger question is at stake. What happens to them, now that their life is shared? What happens to those who land in June, when their March doubles make decisions that will change their lives forever?

And as the doubles prepare to meet, they have an extraordinary decision to make.

If there are two of them, and just one life—who gets to live it?

A runaway best seller and winner of the 2020 Prix Goncourt, The Anomaly is a genre-defying, whip-smart novel that explores the very essence of who we are.

unusual story plot

The book does not deal with the "anomaly" itself so don't expect a typical story with heroes facing an anomaly and finding the answer at the end of the book.
Instead the book is about the consequences of the anomaly on some of the passengers who have different circumstances.
The book brings up very interesting ideas about life and identity, which is the interesting aspect of the story.
I am not used to read this type of book so I found it both fascinating and disappointing (I still want to know what this anomaly was).

An instant classic

Wow! what a great book with a clever plot and characters with depth. The narrator is good WHEN he avoids making accents because those are awful. First of all, as a reader I never imagine accents just give characters cultural background if I know they come from a specific country so the accents throw me off the story a couple of times which is a disservice yo the author and the story.

Went nowhere, slowly

Could have been an interesting story, interesting characters, but ultimately, it basically was just a bunch of disparate characters, and no science or real plot. Why would I read this??

Disappointing

I gave this 3 stars for the excellent translation which felt as though it was sympathetic to the original text.
The story took way to long to get going, there were lengthy back stories to all the main characters which added very little to the story. Eventually the story gets to its main point and then it descends from there in a kind of whimper. There is no explanation of what caused the anomaly, just lengthy and ultimately pointless musings on how the characters dealt with it.

Well-written, well-narrated

This was a unique, interesting story. The book was well-written, and I found the characters interesting. The narration was very good; some reviewers have complained about pronunciation of certain words, but people have accents and it’s a beautiful thing! Life would be dull if we all spoke the same way.

Good title, minor technical issues

I enjoyed this title although I was sceptical thanks to the long exposition. There are few minor problems like not matching chapter tags. The bigger one is missing part of the text in the scene on the airplane.

Outstanding

Contender for the best fiction I’ve ever read. Really clever story. All angles considered. High quality Sci Fi - a rarity!

Great story. Poor narration.

Narrator seems to have a poor grasp of basic pronunciation. Boeing = boing. Keanu (Reeves) = Keenu. Hectare = hectar

I love this story but my ears hurt.

clever and thought providing

clever twist on the idea of a matrix but don't be fooled by that, it questions not just our existence but how we react to the unfathomable. watch out for the twist
