Tough to read in places - but beautifully written
So, I've completely done this all in the wrong order - but this is actually the third book in the Purple Hearted Series, which I've already read books 4 and 6 - Unforgettable and Never Again.
Although these books are part of the same series, this book focusses on completely different characters - so worked perfectly well even if you've read none of the other books.
However, I absolutely love this authors writing style and content and so I'd definitely recommend reading these and I'm determined to grab the books I'm missing and give them all a read (and re-read) in the right order soon.
This story deals with and explores quite a few really tough topics - please do check the content warnings before reading!
But, if you're ok with everything, then this really is a beautiful read.
I wasn't instantly in love with the characters but as the story unfolds, I warmed to them completely and really just wanted to dive in and help them through their trauma.
Following alternating chapters to begin, we learn the background of both Sophie and Oliver and the events that had led up to the present day where we find these two broken people.
I hadn't read the blurb beforehand so just from the text, I really wasn't sure when they met, where the storyline was going - but I think this is why I loved it more. There was that uncertainty that kept me racing through the book.
I loved how the characters developed - both the way they dealt with their initial traumas, how they pulled themselves out of this and also the way they offered support and a future for each other.
This was hard to read in places and I admit to having a few tissue moments - but there were still lots of gorgeous scenes which had me smiling and even some humour thrown in too (I'm thinking Hope's new word for chicken nuggets!!) - all of which fitted perfectly within the context of the storylines.
I loved this book so much and can't wait to read more by this author.

heartbreaking survival
I'll admit that when I first starting listening, I really wasn't a fan of Sophie, but as the story went on I really got invested in her story and her journey with Oliver. it was heartbreaking but wholesome and deals with a most triggering subject in such a real and sensitive way.
I haven't read any of the other books in the series, but I really like the author's writing style and the narration was on point too, and I have already decided I shall be investing in the rest of the series.
