About this listen

MX Hub had proven to have challenges that Zander hadn't anticipated.

Accidentally getting tagged by a rogue element, he thwarted corporate espionage at Maverick Mecha Manufacturing. Lavella Hemoesta, the owner of Maverick, met with him to work out a deal so her company wouldn't be given bad press. That meeting changed the future for both Lavella and Zander.

After a few false starts, including a multiple homicide in a hedge maze, the pair finally found time for intimate fun. Zander flipped the script on Lavella, making the Vampire prey instead of the predator, firmly setting their budding relationship in stone. After the whirlwind sex, Zander proposed a crazy idea that set the stage for something unseen by galactic society: a mecha tournament.

During the tournament, Zander led his team to victory using his training as a military contractor. In doing so, he flouted the training left by the Antecedents, but his squad won handily every time. Some of the losing squads took it badly, but none as badly as Smaztil Hammish, the lead pilot of Proud Axe. When the Dwarven pilots lost, they physically attacked Zander's at the end of the tournament.

With the tournament over and a party waiting, the crew stopped only long enough to try collecting their bets. The organized crime group who'd taken the bet refused to pay up. Instead of a bloody confrontation, Zander just forwarded the video evidence to the magistrates and they left the gang behind.

What would come from Zander's flagrant disregard of the Antecedents' training? Would the criminal organization take umbrage at being called out? Only time will tell…

Lost human in space

It's a good take on a modern day soldier being transported to space. Enemies are easy to dislike as they are giant bugs, there's hot women and mecha so what's not to like? I especially enjoy when the fighting breaks out as it's fast paced and brutal like a real fight.

we finally fight the bugs!

three books in an Zander finally fights the bugs. it feels like a culmination of what's being built up. the world of this book is fascinating and the characters are a really interesting mix.

the pacing does feel a bit slow at times as the book seems more slice of life, plus there are a LOT of parallel plotlines (his unorthodox training, his business stuff, the whole gang playing a vr RPG. it feels like a lot!)

Andrea does a great job bringing the characters to life as a solo narrator - her range is amazing.

the best bits are the mecha fights, and those are sadly fewer than id like. a lot of stuff is described after the fact so Zander can show his skills. I'd like more in the simulation demonstrations. and hopeully MORE mecha fights in the real world.

the book does set up the next plot threads too with the potential politics.

weirdly, although this is a spicy series as well, the constant cutesy names are jarring. the Dom / sub stuff is well done but although I like spice I wanted to see the plot advance more. this book did fade to black where it was needed and did a good job focusing on the meaningful spice, which was a welcome change from the last two books.

you can see the series maturing and becoming more comfortably paced. I look forward to the next in the series!
