About this listen

As a young child, Lydia and her sister were sent to live with grandparents they'd never even met. It's a cruel and loveless new world for them and it teaches Lydia to grow up fast. She learns to keep secrets and to trust sparingly.

And through it all she suppresses her grief and guilt, believing she is to blame for her mother's death. Now, 28 years later, Lydia is persuaded to leave behind the safe new life she has created in Venice, and return to England to face the past. And maybe her future...

Good story. Well narrated

I quickly got engrossed in the story. The narrator was very good and her voices for the characters very plausible. I was sorry when the story finished, which is usually a feature of a good book.

Very uneven

I found it a struggle to keep listening to this; at times I was absorbed by the story, but more frequently just irritated by the totally illogical behaviour of the main character. The whole story is really based on a highly unlikely premise. It is also too long; could have done with some thorough editing. As far as the audio goes, the Italian accents are exasperating; I nearly gave up after the first 20 minutes!

Tell It To The Skies

Thought provoking story, beautifully written and narrated. Lydia is such a brave girl, dealing with her younger sister and a very difficult life.

A great....

storyline with some lovely characters and antics within the book. The narrator was very good at using different voices for the characters.

Fantastic! - What a compulsive read

What did you like most about Tell it to the Skies?

I bought this book as a I recently started reading Erica James novels. Thinking this was going to be in the same vein as the others I had recently read - but oh no! this was in a different style and so compulsive (just like her others).I could not guess at how this story was going to unfold so I just kept my ipod on and kept reading - only stopping to go to bed LOL. Up in the morning and back on went the Ipod.

I loved this book and I like Erica James writing styles.I cannot recommend her books highly enough - give one a try and you will see that if you like one you, like me,you will like them all.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the tale of the 2 sisters and how their live stories evolved and the finale when everything was revealed.

What does Maggie Mash bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She narrated this book so well I felt I was in the story - at no time did her narration detract from the story - in fact it enhanced it. Great narrator.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Sisters to the end

Any additional comments?

I am so delighted with the Erica James novels that I am going to get them all over time and spend many hours listening to her stories - with the narrators used so far they have all enhanced the stories. So bring on my credits LOL!

Frustrating but listenable

I found this hard to get into, and perhaps would have done better with an abridged version, as this moved too slowly for me. Too much time was spent on the main character's childhood, and not enough on the later years. I also felt that the reason for her exile was stretched a bit thinly in places. The complete break with England by both Lydia and Joey was not quite believable either. It was frustrating, as I tried to tell her what she should do - but kept me listening.

My favourite Erica James novel!

Totally absorbing novel with diverse characters which unfold during the course of the story over a long period of time. Erica writes very well from the children's perspective and we see how they develop from early childhood right through to middle age. This is a fabulous love story and I particularly liked the section in Venice. I was sorry when it ended although I felt the saga was tied up nicely for the reader. Superb narration from Maggie Mash.

Brilliantly written

An amazing story of courage determination secrets and lies.
The Author did a brilliant job of drawing the listener into the story, not always an easy thing to do as it takes talent to achieve.

Her best

Of all Erica James's novels that I've read or listened to, this is the clear best. Whist I have found many of her novels to be cliched, chick lit, this one doesn't fall into these categories. One of those writers who seems to have to pull everything together for a happy ending, regardless of how unlikely that might be, this novel was much more believable and had more to it than the others. If you're new to her, I'd suggest this and 'The Queen of New Beginnings'.
