About this listen

Dr. Asante Argueta's life has just been shattered into a thousand unrecognizable pieces. One minute she is a self-assured, highly driven, accomplished surgeon and the next moment, she is being tranquilized and kidnapped, only to wake up in a mental health facility.

As the mysteries of her tragic childhood unfold, a hidden world of miraculous abilities, secret factions, and the power of the now are revealed.

When the truth behind the veiled reality known as normal life is exposed, the fight for the fate of the human mind begins. Asante is the last hope against the tyranny that has enslaved the collective conscience if she can realize There’s Only Right Now.

Ride the wave

A dramatic and slightly unsettling opening chapter makes a quick entry for the reader and raised expectations for the story which follows. And it is an interesting thriller although, as it stands something is lacking: esentially, the reason why. You'll have to read the book.
It is however, an interesting concept with engaging characters who grow and change as the book progresses. It does it follow a direct time line but takes the reader indiscriminately into past situations to clarify or illuminate something, or someone, in the text. This could be confusing were it not for the excellent reading by Marni Penning who voices every character so distinctly, it is a simple task to follow each one through space of time. She also imbued her narration with gently energetic emotion, making for a lively listen.

The text is mostly well written although it does contain bizarre phrases such as, "in which this world was built upon", and the overall impression is one of simplicity and beauty even when the deaths of many, by tsunami or armed attack, take place. The stillness of being in the now? Rather too much meditation and idealistic psychobabble for this reader, but still an interesting read even if the initial promise of mysterious excitement was not fully fulfilled.

My thanks to the rights holder of T.O.R.N., who, at my request via Audiobook Boom, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. Definite!y a book to recommend: not so much science fiction as a view of a more idealistic lifestyle, a!though I seriously doubt that this has been fully thought out. Good characterisation and clean, even the violence is muted. Worth a read
