About this listen
The definitive biography of Sylvia Pankhurst, a woman ahead of her times - political rebel, human rights champion and radical feminist.
Born into one Britain's most famous activist families, Sylvia Pankhurst was a natural rebel, a talented artist, prolific writer and newspaper editor. A free spirit and radical visionary, history placed her in the shadow of her famous mother, Emmeline, and elder sister, Christabel. Yet Sylvia Pankhurst was the most revolutionary of them all.
Sylvia found her voice fighting militantly for votes for women. Her commitment to equality caused her to serve multiple sentences in Holloway prison - where she was tortured. The vote was just the beginning of her lifelong defence of human rights, from her early warnings of the rise of fascism in Europe, to her campaigning against racism and championing of the liberation struggles in Africa and India. Sylvia's adventures in America, Soviet Russia, Scandinavia, Europe and East Africa made her a true internationalist. She was one of the great minds of the modern era, engaging with political giants, including Churchill, Lenin, Rosa Luxemburg, George Bernard Shaw, W. E. B. Du Bois and Haile Selassie.
Her intimate life was no less controversial. The rupture between Sylvia, Emmeline and Christabel became worldwide news. Her love affair with the married Keir Hardie was one of the great political romances of the age, and she never married her life partner, Silvio Corio, with whom she had a son at the age of 45.
Acclaimed biographer Rachel Holmes interweaves the personal and political to reveal Sylvia Pankhurst as never before. This major new biography celebrates a life in resistance, painting a compelling portrait of one of the greatest unsung political figures of the 20th century.

An exceptional read
Rachel Holmes has done an incredible job of shining a light on this incredible woman. I was reluctant to say goodbye to Sylvia. Wonderfully narrated. I will be recommending this highly to friends and family.

Brilliant all round!
I have loved listening to this book. It’s really well written, and managed to keep my attention throughout, and the narrator was absolutely superb! If this is a topic you’re interested this is a perfect deep dive into the life, times and beliefs of Sylvia Pankhurst.

very good
I was disappointed when i finished it, I felt like I got to know her, the author did a really good job of showing her personality. i didnt know much about Sylvia pankhurst apart from the suffragettes movement. i learned a lot about all the different movements she spearheaded how she always stuck to her morales and I've come away with a real admiration for her.
The narrator was really good and thought her accents were spot on and was easy to listen to

A Very British Conspiracy: a hero in plain sight
To collect and absorb such a significant body of research is extraordinary in my experience. Rachel Holmes has created a seminal text, written with the confidence only profound knowledge and artistry can bring. It is written with the kind of skill and clarity exhibited by Sylvia Pankhurst throughout her life. Rachel shares her love of Sylvia through brilliant insights and dedicated scholarship. Her writing invites the listener to reflect upon their position and weaknesses in a most constructive way - we come up short. Audible has created a rare thing of beauty, brilliantly read and produced. Bravo!
