About this listen

When a medical procedure goes horribly wrong and famous actor Ralph Meier winds up dead, Dr. Marc Schlosser needs to come up with some answers. After all, reputation is everything in this business. Personally, he's not exactly upset that Ralph is gone, but as a high profile doctor to the stars, Marc can't hide from the truth forever.

It all started the previous summer. Marc, his wife, and their two beautiful teenage daughters agreed to spend a week at the Meier's extravagant summer home on the Mediterranean. Joined by Ralph and his striking wife Judith, her mother, and film director Stanley Forbes and his much younger girlfriend, the large group settles in for days of sunshine, wine tasting, and trips to the beach. But when a violent incident disrupts the idyll, darker motivations are revealed, and suddenly no one can be trusted. As the ultimate holiday soon turns into a nightmare, the circumstances surrounding Ralph's later death begin to reveal the disturbing reality behind that summer's tragedy.

Featuring the razor-sharp humor and acute psychological insight that made The Dinner an international phenomenon, Summer House with Swimming Pool is a controversial, thought-provoking novel that showcases Herman Koch at his finest.

Kept me interested, a good read

Would you consider the audio edition of Summerhouse with Swimming Pool to be better than the print version?

I rarely read books now that I have audible so I couldn't say but I do prefer listening to reading.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Summerhouse with Swimming Pool?

Nothing stands out as being particularly memorable for me

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I think the narrator got it just right for me.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The narration makes the book. The book would make a very mediocre film.

Any additional comments?

The authors previous book 'The Dinner' would make an excellent film

An average but gd storyline, if not a little weird

Any additional comments?

I found this to be a bit weird but at the same time a bit of fun. In all honesty it did have me quite captivated towards the end and I ended up enjoying it very much. Definitely give this a go.

When I say a little weird, I mean there are some parts of the story that I didn't find believable. The narrator is quite irritating, with a raspy voice that didn't do too well with switching from character to character during the dialogue. Also, he has a raspy voice that instantly got on my bosom. However, if you can get past that it's a reasonable audiobook.

Tiresome Reading of Low Rent "Lolita"

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Anyone who wouldn't mind being trapped in an elevator with a snarling, sex obsessed narcissist.

Would you ever listen to anything by Herman Koch again?

No.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His accent changed from sentence to sentence, and sometimes within the same sentence. At times it was American southern, and then New York-ish, and occasionally some kind of Western European. It was startling to hear the protagonist refer to himself as Dutch.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Summer House with Swimming Pool?

I would hand the manuscript back to Koch and tell him to return when he had something worthwhile to publish. Clearly Koch was keen to cash in on the success of his previous novel and dashed this off in one go.

Any additional comments?

A cynical story made worse by an insufferable, irritating narrator. A waste of time and Audble credit.
