Extreme Ownership’s teachings are derived primarily from Willink and Babin’s time spent in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005 and 2006. Willink and Babin belonged to SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser, one of the most decorated special operations outfits of the Iraq War. Willink served as the commander of Task Unit Bruiser, and Babin worked under him as the platoon commander of Charlie Platoon, one of the two platoons comprising Task Unit Bruiser.

Following their deployment, Babin and Willink co-founded Echelon Front, a consultation company that applies their military teachings and discipline to the corporate world and workforce.
