Summary

Dom Joly has itchy feet. Again. He wants to get away. But, at the same time, something is nagging at him. He’s pretty sure he’s taken the country he lives in, England, for granted. As the 18th-century Italian playwright, Carlo Goldoni once wrote: 'A wise traveller never despises his own country.' But that was alright for Carlo. He lived in Venice.

Mystifyingly, 37.9 million visit England each year. Why? There’s basically nothing here. What are they looking for, and what do they find? Dom decides to try to find out. To do something he’d never considered before: to treat England as he would any other country. Surely there’s more to England than a slightly dull, green and pleasant land. Surely, it’s not just fish and chips, Shakespeare and the queen. Is it?

Maybe not, but there is one English cliché that’s definitely true: such miserable weather.

Paused a few times from laughing so hard!

I snapped this book up as soon as I saw it had been accidentally released early. I love Dom's unique and always brilliant insight into the places he visits and this gad-about around England, just before Covid hit, is an absolute blast! From his run in with proper locals in a locals pub to having to be rescued by a bemused farmer up a hill and with all the identikit cathedrals, beautiful landscapes, questionable hotels and niche museums inbetween - that and the odd trolling of an indifferent horse makes for an absolute giggle-fest. I had to pause the book a number of times as was laughing too much to hear what was going on next. Snorting, too. This book is a cracking listen!

Hoped it would be funnier

The narration is good but it felt like a story about a somewhat privileged but grumpy man travelling the U.K tying it in with a prearranged tour and finding things to slate

Another excellent Dom Jolly book

Jolly is a good narrator and you really do feel his connection and passion for the topic in his narration. Excellent comic timing as well as you would expect. Good balance between silly and informative.

The element I enjoyed the most was the impact of COVID through the book, knowing what the end would be and being interested in seeing how it specifically impacted the story.

Well worth a listen

I went looking for the 1* reviews!

Another triumph of a book by Dom Joly, I really enjoy his observational and conversational style. It’s like chatting to an old friend. A real enjoyable trip around mainland U.K. filled with the usual hilarious Joly anecdotes. I particularly liked the off roading!

I also look for the 1* reviews, to save you some time, the people who don’t like this book exclusively find themselves in that place because they dislike DJ poking fun at brexiteers and anti-vaxxers….oh and they dislike people who like sauces to a sufficient degree that they have a room for them.

Glued to my ears

Alfred Wainwright wrote “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing” and here on Don’s slightly random journey shows there nothing miserable on his journey around Blighty just light to be shed and a story to be told, on which he does in his irrefutable style on his merry way. The only problem I had was when other people interrupted especially the Ryanair Air announcements over my holiday listening, it a must listen

You can't go wrong with a book by Dom

Loved it, funny and uplifting. Audio books are best read by the author and Mr Joly never seems to disappoint! Hope you write many more.
