Middle-aged, jaded and divorced, TV scriptwriter Harada returns one night to the dilapidated downtown district of Tokyo where he grew up. There, at the theatre, he meets a likable man who looks exactly like his long-dead father. And so begins Harada's ordeal, as he's thrust into a reality where his parents appear to be alive at the exact age they had been when they had died so many years before.

Short unusual gripping

A story of realism and yet surreal
A story of the supernatural or an episode of severe illness
Enjoy and choose if you can

Different

I love Japanese novels. They are always quirky and very different. This book has several plot twists that you don't expect.

Whimsical

Enjoyed listening to this and felt it had moments of poignancy but was engaging and treated the subject matter with a lightness of tone that enhances the story

The parents

I read this after seeing the film all of us strangers. I was curious to compare the story with the film.
I really enjoyed the book and the reading.

Out of this world experience

I chose this book as it is to be made into a movie, and, for a long time, I have been fascinated by all things Japan and their way of approaching life eg Departures (a older movie about funerals)

WOW! I was not disappointed!

The interplay of reality and spirit worked so well, the listen was wholly plausible.
And though I haven’t seen a photo of the narrator, I imagined him of Japanese descent. The timbre of his voice was well chosen for this listen.

Great story

Having watched the upcoming film adaptation I was eager to read the book. A great story and I enjoyed it, the only gripe I have is the reading of it. Around chapter 7/8 I swear I could hear the narrators tummy rumbling! Also around chapter 9 the sound quality changed. Otherwise I would recommend
