Summary

Considering the last few years, Viktor Warden should be prepared for anything: a murderous ex-wife, body-snatching, and fighting tooth and nail with some of the most evil, gruesome foes the world has ever seen.

Looks like that might have just been the warm-up. As the world reels in the wake of a pandemic, ghosts from his past rise out of the Aether to extract their pound of flesh whether he’s willing to pay or not.

In his search to stay above ground, he’ll need to fend off cultists, the Blighted - vampires changed by the Gaia contagion - and the Black Circle, all at once.

To further complicate matters, he’s on a tight schedule. Xiwangmu has picked now, of all times, to fulfill her end of an ancient bargain. And she isn’t willing to take no for an answer.

So, no pressure or anything.

“Think zombie popsicles with assorted flavours of rotten ass”

As with all of Ken’s books, this is a great listen and I can’t recommend it enough!
An urban/sci-fi with mythic gods and monsters of all varieties, filled with intense action, a brilliant developing magic system and overflowing with dry snark and brutal fight scenes. The depth of these books are amazing and I’d highly recommend reading all of them!!
As for narration, Andrew is easily one of the best I’ve come across with fantastic unique character voices and he easily portrays the intensity of the situations!

Another belter, from an author who gets better with each book.

Fast, furious, relentless, rollicking, exciting and…. surprising.

Ken Lange has hit another home run, with the latest Warden book. Character development continues and there is a glimpse of the possibilities opening for the protagonist, who is beset at all times and on all fronts by implacable powerful foes.

And then there are the surprises. I won’t spoil anything, but I sure as hell didn’t see many of them coming - especially the biggest.

Thank you, Ken, for another hugely entertaining, innovative and exciting novel.

Now I have to wait until the next…. Dammit!

One thing about Ken’s books that makes him stand out from others is his mechanism of showing you events from another of his novels, or which had been spoken of, therein, by other characters. But he shows you them from the point of view of the differing protagonist in each new novel, which revitalises or expands and explains storylines and makes things far more interesting.

Overall, it’s like a piece of knot work, of old - perhaps even the Valknut - as plots intertwine, characters interact and their experiences are told and retold from varying viewpoints. I like it a lot. It’s innovative and something I haven’t experienced before.

Anyway, this is a grade A fantasy/sci-my(thology) novel from an author whose confidence must surely be growing, with every new novel in this marvellous saga.

Thanks again, Ken. I cannot wait until the next.

Oh, and of course, needless to say, Andrew is bloody marvellous as Viktor - and everyone else, in the novel.

Five stars out of Five, for me.
