Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

You don’t get biceps like Briggs by giving up when the going gets tough....

CrossFit superstar Sam Briggs, a.k.a. ‘The Engine’, is a true hero in the sport, with a level of endurance unparalleled in the game. This is the story of how she got to the top and battled with everything she had to stay there.

Sam’s memoir takes in the whole story, from being kicked out of ballet lessons as a child but being accepted on the boys’ sports teams, to working as a firefighter in West Yorkshire for 10 years, tackling dangerous and adrenaline-fueled situations on a daily basis and to taking up CrossFit at the comparatively ancient age of 27. Sam tells of what it took to become champion a mere three years later and after a year out with a broken patella. Despite the numerous setbacks and debilitating injuries that have plagued her in the years that followed, when most other athletes would have thrown in the towel, Sam has fought and continues to fight, to be the very best that she can be.

Start Your Engines is the story of how, with a combination of grit, training and dogged motivation, it’s never too late to achieve your dreams.

Loved it

Always nice to see a book by an athlete from your own country, and for me I liked the narrator and her quirky accent, sort of sounded like jane horrocks(think that's how it's spelt lol)

inspirational

Sam Briggs is such an inspiration. Shame Sam didn't read it, but I saw on IG covid meant she couldn't get to the studio.

Dreadful Narration

Content was good but completely ruined by a dreadful narrator with, what sounded like, an awful, put on accent. Completely ruined the book for me.

Wish I’d read the hard copy

Incredible competitor and a great insight into her life but very difficult to listen to on account of the narrators voice. Couldn’t sound less like an inspiring CrossFit champion. I don’t mind the accent but the pitch and tone were so wrong.

Brilliant

Okay so the actual book is brilliant but the narrator is well not so good! I travel a lot hence why I got the audiobook and not the book so I just sort of got used to it after a while but it’s like listening to that little chicken from Chicken Run talk, who sits knitting and says things like “I don’t wanna be a pie I don’t like gravy”
Anyway that aside the book is amazing! Such a great insight in to Sam’s life and journey as a Crossfitter! I absolutely loved it!

Please change the narrator

The narrator is like a really bad children’s story reader - this is a book I would have really enjoyed listening to but only managed 10mins before giving up. I live up north so used to the accent but this really grated on me - I’m sure your overseas fans will find this 10x more annoying. A reader with more universal accent would be far better.
Will have to read it instead. What a shame though!
