About this listen

A Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick

‘Alix E. Harrow is an exceptional, undeniable talent’ -
Olivie Blake, author of The Atlas Six

Step into Starling House if you dare. Alix E. Harrow reimagines Beauty and the Beast in this gorgeously modern Gothic fantasy, perfect for fans of V. E. Schwab and Naomi Novik.

No one in Eden remembers when Starling House was built. But everyone agrees that it’s best to let the house – and its last, lonely heir – go to rot.

Starling House is uncanny and ugly and fully of secrets, just like its heir. Opal knows better than to mess with haunted houses or brooding men, but it might be a chance to get her brother out of Eden. It feels dangerously like something she’s never had: a home.

But Opal isn’t the only one interested in the house, or the horrors and wonders that lie beneath it. If Opal wants a home, she’ll have to fight for it. She’ll have to dig up her family’s ugly history and let herself dream of a better future. She’ll have to go down, down into Underland, and claw her way back to the light . . .

This is a romantic and spellbinding Gothic fairytale from Hugo, Nebula and Locus Award-shortlisted Alix E. Harrow.

'Starling House is Alix E. Harrow’s greatest work yet' - Ava Reid, author of A Study in Drowning

‘Gorgeous, poignant, and honest – an unforgettable read’ - Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter

Meh!

A confusing book that begun with a chilling premise and build up but then started to get quite flat from about halfway. I struggled to finish this, there didn't seem to be enough flow and consistency with the story. The characters felt heavily flawed but described well, at times it really picked up the pace but then went slow and flat again, fast, slow and flat again; a strange pattern which kept me hovering at the edge of really investing in it. Ultimately I skipped to the end and it actually ended fairly decently. Because of this erratic pattern I downgraded from a 3.5 to 2.75. A lacklustre read for me.

Dark and wonderful

I loved this book. The writing, narration, characters, story, all of it. Beauty and the beast with eldritch horrors. I can’t get enough of this author.

A spellbinding story

I really enjoyed this.
I liked the narrator - as she gave it a real American feel.
The story is about a girl who has, essentially, lost everything. She only has her brother.
They live in Eden- a small wrecked town.
One day she gets a new job and her adventures start- or maybe they just continue…
Magical

Great narration

Worth persevering despite there being too much description of the same thing. Magical but also the power of the psyche.

Good atmosphere but missing something

Audio really good. Good atmosphere at the house but would say it either had to be shorter or longer as some things were not developed enough for it not to feel like it dragged at times.

Captivated from the start.

This is the first book I have read by this author. Starling House was in my Illumicrate book box. I sat and devoured it. Loved it so much that I then grabbed a copy on audible. The narrator did an incredible job bringing the book to life. Not giving any spoilers as the book blurb tells you all you need to know. It’s one I will keep reading.
