Great insight ....

...into the secret world of North Korea. Good listen and story based around what seems to be some well researched facts.

SUPERB, a brilliant listen

I was completely absorbed in this book. I knew nothing about it but guessed it had a factual basis which made it all the more compelling. If you are looking for an excellent thriller that verges alarmingly into reality then this is for you.

Excellent

This is the first book I have listened to by D B John. I found it to be so interesting, especially concerning the lives of people in North Korea. The story was compulsive and nail biting and kept me listening, almost without a break. Great narrator too. Will be looking for more by this author.

Intriguing insight into North Korea

This book was recommended by an assistant in the local book store. She mentioned that the author had visited N Korea so I gave it a try. Wow- what a great listen, very well narrated and a brilliant story. The characters and plot are very well thought out and dovetail perfectly with the political, cultural and social climate in North Korea over the past few decades. I was horrified to learn how the Kim dynasty imposed its rule on the country and its inhabitants and all credit to the author for his research and portrayal of this tyrannical regime. High recommended , entertaining as well as eye opening.

Grating accent

This excellent book was let down by the awful pronunciation of the narrator. Especially difficult were French words such as Cognac.

The most grating were sentences like “... was buoyed up by …” pronounced as “boo-ee”. The author of the book is British and a more British sounding reader or an East Coast reader would have been far preferable.

A good story spoilt by poor narration

A good story but the intonation of the narrator was very distracting and irritating and some of the power of the writing was lost.

Terrific story. Annoying narration

The story is gripping. Listened to it a second time. The narrator became very annoying as she seemed unable to pronounce any word that had a double letter R in the middle e.g. Corridor, horror, mirror. Other than that I could not stop, listening to this book.

Star of the North - a must

Rarely has a book affected me as much as this one has. It provides an insight into life and politics in the hidden world of North Korea in a gripping and dynamic way. The reading was excellent and added so much to the immersive experience. An incredible book which should be part of every students essential reading. I couldn't stop listening.
