About this listen

February, 2022. Russia invades Ukraine, the biggest attack on a European country since World War I. Matt 'Lastman' Standing and a crack SAS team are sent into the war zone. Their mission - to help the Ukrainians defend their country from the Russian invaders. But when Russian mercenaries begin committing atrocities and war crimes in occupied Ukraine, MI6 decides to change the rules of engagement.

Standing and his team are given new orders - to take out the Russian president, one of the most protected men in the world. It has all the makings of a suicide mission, but Standing is the last man to turn down a challenge.

Good Listen

I really like the Matt Standing books and this was a really good ride with humour, action and suspense from our likeable hero. Well narrated by Paul Thornley.

it's always Paul Thornley voice and narration. simply wonderful.

Full of energy, humour and excellent forces detail, of which I'm familiar with. Sometimes it's too much detail. I don't need to know the model numbers of all the weaponry. it feels like Stephen is filling word number requirements.

Wow!

Wow! This is yet another brilliant listen from the master of the thriller genre, Stephen Leather. Well written with plenty of good characters. Edge of the seat listening from start to finish, just remember to breathe occasionally. Narration is outstanding from yet another master Mr Paul Thornley. Highly Recommended.

northwest Listener

This is yet another brilliant listen from the master of the thriller genre, Stephen Leather. Well written with plenty of good characters working in an environment that is current and very disturbing. Edge of the seat listening from start to finish, just remember to breathe occasionally. Narration is good by Paul Thornley

felt like it was written by AI, conversation and interactions did not ring true

good idea for a story but feels like it's written by a bot. The conversation and interactions are stilted and don't ring true, the characters are one dimensional at best. Disappointing as have read some of the authors previous work and enjoyed.

Not his best work

Ok but not SL’s best work. Slow to get going and didn’t grip me anywhere near as much as many of his previous books

Usual 5☆ narration.

Was eagerly waiting for Standing no4 but i was a bit disappointed in the story. Im a big fan of Shepherd and now Standing but i found this story lacking compared to the previous three. Paul kept it alive with his usual top rate narrating.

First time I have not finished one of his books!

Very disappointed in this one. The other Standing books have all been very good but this one missed the mark. Great that it is about current affairs but lacked any real story or depth. Hoping he goes back to Lex harper
