About this listen

Iron Druid Atticus O'Sullivan, hero of Kevin Hearne's epic New York Times best-selling urban fantasy series, has a point to make - and then drive into a vampire's heart.

When a druid has lived for 2,000 years like Atticus, he's bound to run afoul of a few vampires. Make that legions of them. Even his former friend and legal counsel turned out to be a bloodsucking backstabber.

Now the toothy troublemakers - led by power-mad Theophilus - have become a huge problem requiring a solution. It's time to make a stand. As always, Atticus wouldn't mind a little backup. But his allies have problems of their own.

Ill-tempered archdruid Owen Kennedy is having a wee bit of troll trouble: turns out when you stiff a troll, it's not water under the bridge. Meanwhile, Granuaile is desperate to free herself of the Norse god Loki's mark and elude his powers of divination - a quest that will bring her face to face with several Slavic nightmares.

As Atticus globetrots to stop his nemesis, Theophilus, the journey leads to Rome. What better place to end an immortal than the Eternal City? But poetic justice won't come without a price: in order to defeat Theophilus, Atticus may have to lose an old friend.

Vampires, gravey and bath time stories

Would you listen to Staked again? Why?

YES!!!!!!!
I loved the story

What other book might you compare Staked to, and why?

I would compare the series to

Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka
Skulduggery pleasant by Derek Landy

What does Christopher Ragland bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narration of Christopher Ragland is as part of the characters as Kevin Hearne for me. He continues to alternate between the three of them, and it's clear which one you're following. the warmth and familiarity his story telling is a joy to listen to.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

the humour and connection to the characters is what makes this series for me

Any additional comments?

I have never been interested in writing a review before however the adventures of Atticus, Granuaile and Owen have compelled be to share my love of these stories. the characters, places and mythology woven throughout out the series keeps me listening and wanting to know what next!

I have loved staked and following Atticus, trying to sort things out!. Granuaile continues to grow reflecting on her self and facing some of her own issues, while Owen is just figuring out his place in the 21st century. Keven continues to draw from the ocean of mythology and take us to ever more interesting destinations and revisiting some familiar characters.

I absolutely love this series and cant wait for the next instalment by Kevin Hearne

Consequences and Sacrifice - What A Great Read!

I love The Iron Druid Chronicles. Kevin Hearne's writing style is fantastic and his stories keep me hooked. His tales are intelligent, well researched but still easy to read. They're full of threads but never leave me feeling confused. Kevin keeps me entertained from the first page to the last. Atticus, Granuaile and Owen all get their own chapters in this book. It's very insightful to get their differing perspectives and a great way of getting to know Granuaile and Owen better.

I downloaded the Audible narration to be able to listen to Staked as well as reading it. However, I ended up listening to the whole thing! Christopher Ragland’s performance was once again outstanding. He transported me into each and every adventure. The pace at which he read the story and the emotions he added to the different scenes was spot on. I loved the different accents and voices he gave each character – his performance brought them all to life. I knew straight away whose head we were in for the different chapters and didn't get lost in any of the conversational dialogue.

While I’m talking about the characters, I must say how much I love them all in this series. They’re complex, written with their own tales and histories. It makes each one feel real and believable - even the villains. I love how much Granuaile and Owen are featuring in this series now. We get whole adventures and chapters from their perspective in this book. My previously unwavering feelings of righteousness for Atticus's actions have been adjusted seeing situations from their viewpoints. Oberon, Atticus’ faithful Irish Wolfhound is still the BEST. He just lights up my heart in every scene he’s in.

Although the story was fast-paced it never felt rushed. We never had more information than our protagonists. Therefore we journeyed with them, never really knowing when or where the next problem would occur or the next attack would strike. I loved that I spent most of my time on the edge of my seat.

Staked is the eighth book in the Iron Druid Chronicles so a lot has happened so far. However, Kevin does a good job of weaving any pertinent information into the story seamlessly. I didn’t notice any detrimental effects to the flow or pace.

I already have the next audiobook in this incredible series, Scourged, and I can’t wait to see what trials and adventures Atticus, Granuaile, Owen and the hounds have to face next!

more more need more

I can't get enough of the iron druid saga. An excellently constructed world. It's a true masterpeice with outstanding characters. Even the comedy side kick has cult status. Oberon is the single greatest story tool I've encountered. it's rare that a book series generates so many beloved characters; any one of which would be deserving of their own book series. Kevin's wealth really is in the stunning diversity of his rich and we'll constructed characters.

more please :-)

Nigel rides again

Love the series But. Staked seems more like a rushed filler, than the content rich earlier books in the series. Not helped by a change of narrator. After Luke Daniels it was a few chapters before I could settle in with the new voices. please change back. The book seems to be a stretched novelette trying to bring the story lines together. enjoyable but not the best in the series. Kevin Hearne is a great writer, he is up there with Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files " and the "Rivers of London " from Ben Aaronovich. So hopefully we will be back to quality in the next book.
