About this listen

"Old habits die hard for assassins. And I plan on murdering someone before the night is through.

"Killing used to be my regular gig, after all. Gin Blanco, aka the Spider, assassin-for-hire. And I was very, very good at it. Now, I'm ready to make the one hit that truly matters: Mab Monroe, the dangerous Fire elemental who murdered my family when I was 13. Oh, I don't think the mission will be easy, but turns out it's a bit more problematic than expected. The bitch knows I'm coming for her. So now I'm up against the army of lethal bounty hunters Mab hired to track me down. She also put a price on my baby sister's head. Keeping Bria safe is my first priority. Taking Mab out is a close second. Good thing I've got my powerful Ice and Stone magic - and my irresistible lover, Owen Grayson - to watch my back. This battle has been years in the making, and there's a good chance I won't survive. But if I'm going down, then Mab's coming with me...no matter what I have to do to make that happen."

A fitting conclusion

Would you listen to Spider's Revenge again? Why?

I found this 5th episode in Gin Blanco's saga against Mab Monroe fitting - a number of the pieces came together in her history, and her life is starting to settle down at last with her sister gradually coming to accept her as she now is.

Who was your favorite character and why?

With Gin Blanco being centre stage (we see the story unfold through her eyes), it's difficult to get a real feeling for any of the other characters, although over the series we start to hear something of their stories. I can't say that I truly like Gin - she's become hard and ruthless, but she's also a "rough diamond" who is willing to help people who are helpless.

What does Lauren Fortgang bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I like Lauren's portrayal of the different characters. She is able to provide a good range of voice characterizations that seem right for each of them. Also, she brings out the drama in the situations without overdoing it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

While my time availability doesn't allow that luxury, I would have liked the opportunity to do this. There were some sections where the storyline slowed its pace, but overall, it was an engrossing tale.

Any additional comments?

I found the earlier books had too much explicit sex, graphically written, that didn't do anything for the storyline - it seemed to be there just to cater for those who like their personal relationships to be physical and earthy. This book, at last, kept this quite low, and the storyline improved, in my opinion. Also, the liberal use of the "f" word is subdued compared to the previous books. (Yes, I know Gin has had a very rough life but this word can be used with judgement in story telling, not to spice up dialogue.)
